Mustang News - November 1, 2024
From The Principal
This week I had the chance to see deep learning in so many classrooms: students collaborating to represent and analyze biographical data, PE students developing teamwork and lifelong fitness skills through pickle ball, and Spanish students presenting about their ofrendas and their supporting research, and students applying work skills during our Coffee Coral. Also, our Key Club students did an incredible job of collaborating, problem solving, and ultimately hosting an awesome Haunted House last Sunday!
Please remember that all AP Intent to Test forms and payments are due by end of day today, 11/1–please reach out to Jen Trainor if you have any questions (jtrainor@mssd14.org).
Additionally, I would like to congratulate our Boys Soccer team on their tough battle against DSST in playoffs. Our team had a phenomenal season including Alexander S. tying the record for most goals scored in MSHS history!
This Saturday, we are all excited to cheer on both our Girls (9:40 am) and Boys (11:00 am) Cross Country Teams at the State Race at the Penrose Event Center! Go Stangs!
Enjoy your weekend!

Knowledge Bowl Recognition
Knowledge Bowl students had a good showing last week in Woodland Park! 15 teams competed and our two teams were able to get 7th place and 11th place. We were in 3rd place going into the last round when the competition got fierce. We continue to punch above our weight class. Students are excited to adjust their approach and try again next month.
A Word From The Key Club
I'm glad to announce that MSHS Key Club provided the winning pusher team for this year's Emma Crawford Coffin Race. The Team of Fenn L., Logan M., Preston R., and Ethan T. pushed Mary Stapleton (the corpse) in the Kiwanis-built and sponsored coffin to a resounding victory, in costume, in 27.7 seconds. Then they had to race this year's winner of the Tuff Shed Coffin Races in Nederland, Colorado in the annual head to head champions race. They won decisively in 26.9 seconds. Now you can say you personally know champions of Manitou's World Famous Emma Crawford Coffin Race and (perhaps the state and national champions).

A Word From The Spanish Department
Spanish class students (Levels 1 & 2) worked really hard on building Ofrendas for loved ones that have passed away, or for famous individuals, with hispanic background, that have also passed away and have had a positive impact on the hispanic community. Students are being evaluated on their creativity, based on details provided during the lesson for Día De Los Muertos. Level 1 students are also being evaluated on how they applied the verbs SER (to be), TENER (to have), and LLEVAR (to wear) on sentences, in the target language and present tense, describing the person on their ofrendas. Level 2 students are being evaluated on writing sentences, in the target language and preterite tense, describing the person on their ofrendas. Both levels needed to create a voice memo of them, reading the sentences in Spanish, and then create a QR code of their recording. Ofrendas will be displayed in the World Language hallway until November 4th.
From The Art Department
Mr. Bonner's students had some Halloween fun this week carving pumpkins!
A Word From The Counselors
MSHS counselors Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Strupp continue meeting with all 10th grade advisory classes this week 10/18-11/1 to speak about ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plans). At this time we will go over graduation requirements and provide students with their most updated transcripts. We encourage them to share these important documents with you- please ask your student if they have it so you can review.
During these lessons, all 10th grade students will take "The Career Cluster Finder" on Naviance. This tool helps students identify interests and discover career clusters that contain careers that might interest them. All 10th graders also will write their personal post-secondary goal. Counselors will begin 1:1 4-year planning with the class of 2027 this week and will use these Navaince results, as well as students' individual goals to help students make a plan to select meaningful and purposeful course requests for the 2025/26 school year. Please ask your 10th grader about these lessons and their post-secondary plans or simply ask them to login to their Navaince portal to show you their results. Counselors will also start visiting the class of 2028 next week to speak about transcripts and graduation requirements.

A Word From The American Government Department
Senior Azalia Q. is filling out a mock ballot for this year's general election. All seniors in the Government classes participated in the election process the last couple of weeks by filling out mock ballots. It was great practice for the seniors who are eligible to vote this year as well as those who have to wait two more years. The seniors have been extremely engaged in the general election and local proposals presented to the voters.
