Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo - November 18, 2024
Washburne Families,
It was great to see so many families in the building last week for our fall conferences.
This is the last week of our first trimester. Students will receive information about their Trimester 2 electives by the end of the week.
As we head into the second half of November, we wanted to spotlight our monthly observance; Native American Heritage. November is Native American Heritage Month and the official designation of November as National Native American Heritage month was signed into law in 1990. This month, we celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. This is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
We are proud of the progress our students have made this year, and we are thankful and fortunate to have a supportive community that partners with us, as we continue to provide a variety of experiences for our students, preparing them both socially and academically as they continue to high school and beyond.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Carleton Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal
What’s Happening in Related Studies
In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.
The cold weather has settled in and we have one last week of the trimester left. This can mean just one thing - time for a floor hockey tournament! A classic KW activity will be our last sport of trimester one. This trimester we did multiple cross-class tournaments, which also included soccer, flag football (8th grade), and touch-rugby (7th grade). For these cross-class tournaments, we combined all of the KW classes for a given period, and created teams intermixing the classes. Students were given the option to enter the “competitive” tournament or the “recreational” tournament. We then completed a round-robin tournament, and had a lot of fun in the process. We look forward to continuing these mixed events in trimester two as well.
Science Olympiad
Science. . . . is awesome.

Cardio/ Resistance Training Club:
Cardio/resistance training club registration is open. Cardio club is a time for students to improve their fitness training, going beyond what is done in Kinetic Wellness. The Club will meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30. Students may attend when their schedule allows. As a member of the cardio/resistance training club, students will receive 3 hours a week in the fitness room, supervision from a certified KW teacher, and a chance to perform their own workout. The club will start on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 and will continue until March 21, 2025. All students are welcome to join us as we set goals, work on personal training habits, and work on another wonderful lifetime fitness activity.
Registration opens at 9:00am on Tuesday, October 29th via the District Web Store.
If you have any questions, please call or email Mrs. Florance at 847-446-5892 ext. 3179 or candiceflorance@winnetka36.org
