Graduation Attire:
Burnsville High School understands that graduating students may wish to express something about themselves through their graduation attire. District 191 policy allows students to “wear cultural adornments at graduation ceremonies that represent their culture, race, ethnicity, gender and/or sexual orientation. Adornments must be displayed respectfully, truly represent the identity of the wearer, and be consistent with other district policies and our student handbook.” (Policy 105: Equity, Access and Excellence in Education).
Specifically for the graduation ceremony, cultural adornment would be a stole - scarf-like garments worn over the shoulders and around the neck - to represent their cultural identities. Cultural adornments must be approved by administration prior to the ceremony, so students should bring them to rehearsal on Thursday, June 6. In addition American Indian students may wear American Indian regalia, tribal regalia, or objects of cultural significance at the graduation ceremony (MN Statute 124D.792).
Burnsville High School provides stoles and cords to students for academic achievements and for graduating from the school’s AVID program. If you have any additional questions about this topic please reach out prior to graduation.
