September 2024 NRESC Updates from Dr. Vancheri

Welcome Back!

Greetings to the Wonderful NRESC Family!

The 2024-2025 school year is officially underway and we already have one month under our belts! All programs are going strong and we have made a smooth transition from summer to fall! We have officially hit football season, with trick or treaters around the corner, and holiday decorations yearning to come out of storage!

NRESC Convocation 2024!

Thank you to everyone who attended the NRESC 2024 Convocation! We were excited to kick off the new school year together, filled with inspiration, growth, and collaboration. We were also thrilled to host our first in-person opening day event since before COVID and it was very satisfying to host over 100+ staff members in our own facility! #NRESC2024 #InspireEducateLead

New Staff Orientation 2024!

It was a very successful new staff orientation! New staff members got to meet central office point people, as well as our administrative team. And I also got to play the role of teacher with my story of the Commission’s history!

The Voice of the NRESC Snow Day is in 5th Grade!

The voice of the NRESC snow day, Nicholas, is now in 5th grade! We were not crying—it was just fall allergies.

2nd Annual Pasta Dinner at Second Home!

Thank you to our families and community members who celebrated our 2nd Annual Pasta dinner. To say we all had a fun night would be an understatement

Hope Academy's Multicultural Food Celebration was delicious! Families and students shared some smiles and laughter together over their favorite home-cooked dishes.

Around the Commission!

Petting Zoo at Phoenix

Our team at Phoenix works with the recreation department to provide students with immersive experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Our lessons support the creative activities crafted by the talented Phoenix staff. We continue to collaborate on ways to bring the outside world to the Phoenix front door.

Second Home Financial Planning

Community members from TD Bank met with Second Home participants to discuss banking basics. They used interactive activities to educate our clients about different types of accounts and jobs located within a bank. They will be back for a second seminar to discuss budgeting, with a focus on "wants versus needs."

Second Home Library Time

Thank you to the Totowa Library for hosting Second Home and allowing each of our participants to get a Library card!

It's a Rough Job!

September 10 was very tough at work for me. I had to hang out with a group of daycare kids at our Lenox School program in Pompton Lakes, spin them around, let them spin me a bit, and then talk to them about the new Paw Patrol movie. What a tough morning!

Aftercare with the Assistant to the Superintendent!

I was excited to visit one of our new after care programs in Woodland Park, at Charles Olbon School. And it was cool that Nicholas was able to come with me after his day ended. He was a hit with the pre-k kids, who didn’t want him to leave!

Hope Psychology in Action!

Students in Ms. Molloy's Psychology class are starting an exciting new journey into psychology—the study of how we think, feel, and behave.

Through hands-on activities, real-life examples, and class discussions, students will start to see how psychology plays a role in everything from how we make decisions to how we handle emotions. This introduction will lay the foundation for even more interesting topics in the coming weeks, like personality, memory, and mental health.

New Year, New Initiatives!

Play Ball!

The NRESC is committed to partnering with local towns in providing recreational opportunities for children and adults with special needs. We are starting first with a partnership with Little Falls, Totowa, and Woodland Park.

More Subs are on the Way!

With a lack of substitute teachers mirroring our lack of classroom teachers, the NRESC is happy to announce an additional service for members of our cooperative pricing system: access to an additional pool of substitute teachers from ESS and Edustaff at discounted rates.

A Potential Partnership with St. Joseph's Health

School districts are required to provide educational services to long and short term patients in grades K-12 and the NRESC has become the provider of these educational services to children residing at the Phoenix Center, whose home districts are in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Recently, the NRESC began discussions with St. Joseph's Health about expanding these educational services throughout Passaic County. There is more to come!

Who Let the Dogs Out!

We took a field trip to Clifton to meet with Act. Supt Gengaro & the famous therapy dog, Chewie!! Although the visit involved a lot of playtime, work got done, as the NRESC is excited to support our programs, as well as our partner districts, with therapy dogs in the future!

Building an Educational Foundation!

A group of community members and former Commission members have come together and are in the process of forming the NRESC Educational Foundation! It is the foundation's goal to help support current and future NRESC programs and students! We are excited for the foundation to start working in 2025!

NRESCY is on the Way!

Any day now, the new NRESC mascot, NRESCY, will arrive! We look forward to sharing this crazy little guy with our staff, students, and community members! When you get him, keep an eye on him because he is always looking to start new programs! And be sure to bring him if you go anywhere cool and tag us on social media!
