From the Principal.... Matt Clark
While I believe there are many ways we, as parents, can support our middle school children, it’s essential to remember that every middle schooler is unique—even our own. One principle I strive to embody is assuming best intent. I apply this philosophy at Thompson and try my best to do the same as a parent.
With my oldest daughter, it was much easier to assume best intent as a principal than as her parent. I love my now-freshman and believe in valuing every stage of life, but it’s challenging to assume positive intent when every inquiry or request is met with attitude and/or resistance.
Things are different with my current 6th grader; she radiates positive intent and is a genuine kind soul. But as Teddy Roosevelt said, “comparison is the thief of joy,” which is why I love them both for their differences and unique personalities. I wouldn’t trade the middle school years with either of my daughters for anything—they’ve taught me so much.
I share this because I think it is vital that we accept our adolescents for who they are as well as support and encourage them in what they want to become. I am privileged to be your child’s principal and look forward to getting to know each TMS student and honoring them for their distinct personalities.
I look forward to seeing many of you next week at the TMS Curriculum Nights. Enjoy your long weekend with your middle schooler, no matter what that looks like.
Roll Thunder!
