Notification to Parents of the Screening and Referral Process for Gifted Students The consideration for gifted services may be reported or automatic as defined by the GaDOE Resource Manual for Gifted Education Services. The Fulton County School System screens all students for eligibility for gifted services twice a year and uses a systematic approach to identify highly capable students who may qualify for gifted services. The gifted teacher routinely reviews available data to refer students for further assessment. Students meeting either the automatic screening OR the classroom screening criteria AND who have supporting data gathered from test history, products, and/or advanced content levels are referred for additional testing to determine gifted eligibility.
#1: Automatic Screening: Identifies students who score at specified levels on a norm-referenced test as defined in the GaDOE Resource Manual for Gifted Education Services, for further assessment to determine eligibility for gifted services. During each school year, TAG teachers review existing test data as outlined below.
• Grades K-9 o Students with scores in the 90th percentile or greater on the current school year’s administration of the system’s iReady assessment for Reading or Mathematics. Supporting data is needed. (Grades K-8) o Students must score in the 90th percentile or greater on the current school year’s administration of the system’s MAP assessment for Reading or Mathematics. Supporting data is needed. (Grades 2, 7) o Students must score in the Distinguished Level (Level 4) in Reading or Mathematics sections of the previous year’s Georgia Milestones assessment. Supporting data is needed. (Grades 3-9)
• Grades 9-12: o Students with scores in the 90th percentile or greater on the current school year’s administration of the system’s NWEA MAP for Reading or Mathematics. Supporting data is needed. (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12) o Students must have a score in the 90th percentile or greater on the critical reading section or the mathematics section of the PSAT. Supporting data is needed. (Grades 9, 10, 11) o Students must have an overall cumulative average of 95 or greater. Supporting data is needed. (Grades 10, 11, 12)
#2: Classroom Screening: A district screening window of 10 days at the end of the first semester to review all students in the school in grades K-11. Classroom teachers use the Characteristics Instrument for Screening Students (CISS) to identify students with superior abilities in five or more of the following areas: motivation, interests, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, memory, inquiry, insight, reasoning, creativity, and humor.
#3: Reported Referrals: two pieces of supporting data exist to warrant formal testing for gifted eligibility.
Additional Information: Students who meet either the automatic screening OR classroom screening criteria AND who have supporting data gathered from test history, products, and/or advanced content levels are referred for gifted placement testing. Parents may request to view their child’s screening results by reaching out to their school’s gifted contact. Once referred to testing:
• Parents receive the FCS Notification of Consideration for Gifted Services (Consent to Test) and must give written permission for testing to take place.
• Student is tested for the gifted program.
• Parents receive test results.
• If state eligibility is determined to be met, students are placed in the gifted program with parental consent.

Frequently Asked Questions!
Q. Can my child ride home on the bus with a friend?
A. No, students are not permitted to ride on a friend's bus. Please make carpool arrangements.
Q. What is the procedure for picking my student up early?
A. If a student needs to be picked up early, a note should be sent with the student to the front office in the morning, stating the time the parent would like him/her at the front office. The student will get it stamped by the office and this is the pass to come up front to be checked out. We do this so as not to interrupt the class and instructional time. Please do not call the front office requesting your child be sent to the front office. Once you are in the building, we can call them up.
Q. What if my student forgets something and I need to bring it to school?
A. While we hope that students come prepared each day, we have 3 light blue carts in the front office labeled by grade level. We have a small shelf next to the carts stocked with tape, markers and paper for labeling items dropped off. Place the item on the cart of your students' grade level. Unfortunately, we do not call students for forgotten items. The student may pick up items between classes or at lunch time from the cart.
Q. What if my student forgets his/her device?
A. Parents can drop the device at the front desk where we keep them until the students come to get them. It is the students' responsibility to pick them up between classes or at lunch time. Unfortunately, we are unable to call into classrooms for forgotten items.
Q. What if my child gets sick at school?
A. If your student feels sick during the school day, he/she should always go to the clinic. The clinic needs to keep a record of students who are ill. Students SHOULD NOT call or text on their cell phones or smart watches for parents to pick them up.
Q. Is my child allowed to use their cell phone to call home?
A. Cell phones are not allowed to be used during school time. There is a phone in the front office if the student needs to call home. We encourage students to come prepared to school each day, thus the phone is for emergencies only.
Q. Where do I turn in student attendance notes?
A. If your student is out of school, there needs to be a parent or doctors note sent into the front office or emailed within 5 days of being absent.
You may email Jackie Dejo at Dejo@fultonschools.org.
Q. How do I get my students absence to be excused?
A. To have your students absent reflect (excused) in Infinite Campus, you will need to submit a note to the front desk or email Jackie Dejo at Dejo@fultonschools.org
Q. Do I need my ID when checking out my student?
A. Please be prepared to show your ID when checking out your student. This is for the safety of our students, faculty and staff.
Q. What if my student needs medication at school?
A. Students are not allowed to carry medications with them at school unless they have a permission form (SHS-2) signed and on file in the clinic. This includes prescription and over the counter medications of any kind. You may also fill out an SHS - 1 form to keep medication, prescription or over the counter, in the clinic. Our clinic assistant will dispense per orders from form.
Clinic Assistant - Stephanie Sorina - SorinaS@fultonschools.org
Q. What time is the school store open?
A. The school store is open from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Q. What time are students allowed into the school in the morning?
A. The school opens at 7:50 a.m.
Q. Do I need to call the front office if my student is sick for the day?
A. You DO NOT need to call the front office if a student is out sick. Upon returning to school, send a note to the front office or email and the attendance clerk will be adjusted.
Attendance Clerk is Jackie Dejo - Dejo@fultonschools.org
Q. What if my child comes to school late?
A. Parents DO NOT need to bring children in if they are late. Students DO have to report to the office to get a pass to their classroom.
Q. Are students allowed to leave the building without checking out?
A. A parent MUST always come to the front office to check students out of school. This is for the safety of the student.
Note: 1. If someone else is checking your student out they must be on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal Contact list.
2. You may also send a note in with your student with the first and last name of the person picking your child up.
Remember to always send a note with your student to the front desk the morning of the check-out. Please be prepared to show your ID.
