CELEBRATIONS
Great things are happening at WCS!
On Thursday five former Wildcats joined us to volunteer as part of the MHS Freshman Community Service Day. These students spent the morning helping out in classrooms throughout the building. We were thrilled to have them with us, and to hear how high school has been going!
FLU CLINIC
In partnership with Lincoln Health, influenza vaccinations will be offered to Woolwich Central School students this fall. This optional one-day flu clinic is scheduled for Friday, October 25th. If you would like to have your student receive the flu vaccine at school, we must have a consent form signed and returned to the school nurse no
later than next Thursday, October 17th. CLICK HERE for the consent form, or email mbullock@rsu1.org if you would like a printed copy sent home.
NO SCHOOL
Remember: there is NO SCHOOL Today (10/11) as staff gathers for Professional Development; or on Monday (10/14) as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.
FIRE SAFETY DAY
Did you know that October is National Fire Prevention Month? This week students in grades Pre-K though 2 had a chance to learn all about fire safety and prevention from the Woolwich Fire Department! Students were able to meet with a fire fighter and hear about what to do in case of a fire. They also got to see what a firefighter will wear if they have to rescue someone in a real fire. This is especially important as their gear and respirators can sometimes be scary to children who haven't seen it before. Of course, they were also delighted to tour the ambulance and fire truck!
PTA NEWS
We are getting so excited for our Get Glowing Fun Run on October 18th from 5-7! Here’s some answers to a few frequently asked questions!
How Do I Sign Up?
It’s easy! Just make a fundraising page at https://app.99pledges.com/fund/getglowing/addme. If you would prefer not to make an online fundraising page, you can submit an envelope with donated funds (labeled with your child’s name and teacher), OR send us an email at mywcspta@gmail.com and tell us that your student would like to run! Any of these options will ensure that your child will be ready to run on October 18th!
If you are not sure that you will be able to make the run, please sign your child up just in case! It will make everything run more smoothly on the night of the run if they are already on our list!
When are donations due? Can I bring donation money in more than once?
Donations are due on October 18th. Donations can be submitted at any time, and money can be sent in more than once (no need to save that envelope until the 18th!). Please make sure that envelopes are labeled with your child’s name and teacher, so they and their class get credit for the donation!
What is the schedule for the Fun Run?
Check in: 5-6 PM
Prek-2nd grades: 6:00-6:15
3rd-5th grades: 6:15- 6:30
6th-8th grades: 6:30-6:45
Each group of students will run for their allotted 15 minutes. There is no lap goal for each student- the idea is just to have fun and get some physical activity! Please make sure to have your student wear comfortable clothes and running shoes, and be prepared for a great time!
Will there be activities besides running?
Yes! We will have face painting, local emergency vehicles, and glow in the dark frisbees and balls to play with. We will also have pizza, chips, baked goods, and fun glow items for sale!
Can I run with my student?
Absolutely! If you would like to run with your student, that is fine with us!
LINES FROM THE LIBRARY
Thanks to funding from our fabulous PTA, Mr. Huston and Ms. Luchies are able to host a middle school book club again this year. We have twelve 8th grade readers who joined us this week for our first meeting. We all read Okay For Now by Gary Schmidt and met during study hall to discuss the book. It’s great that we’ll be able to meet him next Tuesday and ask follow up questions that we have about what we read!
Things to TACO 'bout
This week Mrs. Dimbleby (dressed as a taco) served lunch to students as a reward for reaching out first PTA fundraising goal!
What is "Professional Development" anyway? There is no school for students on Professional Development days ("PD days"). Staff use these days to learn new curriculum, new methods for teaching and classroom management, and to collaborate with colleagues across the District. on Friday some of the topics staff will work on include: strategies for building student executive functioning skills, math curriculum, and bullying & drug prevention. This school year's PD days are scheduled for: 10/11, 11/5, and 3/14.
The Annual Harvest Supper is happening on Saturday, 10/19 from 4:30 - 6:30pm Tickets are available from any WCS 8th grader, and will also be on sale at the door, the night of the dinner. This event is a fundraiser for our 8th grade's trip to Washington, D.C. in the spring.
