THE OWLET COMMUNITY NEWS
GREENVIEW KNOLLS-FAMILY CONNECTION
Sept.27, 2020
Greetings GK Families,
Fall is certainly showing signs with cool mornings, lots of colorful mums, and fall decorations all around the communities. We have completed 19 days of school!! As we wrap up the month of September, we see that we are surviving and thriving with virtual learning.
Remember to talk to your children about the importance of completing assignments for the their classroom teacher/s and special area teachers. Attendance and completion of assignments are essential. When our students are joining the google meets, they are receiving direct instruction from a teacher. When our students are completing and submitting work, it gives the teacher the opportunity to gage understanding and next steps for support. For the students, completing assignments will reinforce learning as well as build understanding of a specific learning target.
I know I need a post-it note or two to remind me of important daily responsibilities, so consider creating a simple daily check-list for your awesome child/children to review together. The daily checklist is a great way for our students to see that what they are doing is important to you and a great way for you to be a motivator and a monitor:) Let them check it off and share with you- First on the list is: 8:15- join morning meeting.:)
Continue checking for school updates through GKES School Messenger (information from Ms. Fowler) , Class Dojo ( information from teachers) , GKES website and information directly from SMCPS School Messenger (information from Dr. Smith). Can't say enough, being informed is KEY to our partnership. If you need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out directly to your teacher/s, Ms. Simpson (School Counselor), Ms. Wimmer & Ms. Walker (front office), Mr. McClure-Hewiitt & Ms. Fowler (Admin Team).
Remember all are welcome to stop by school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, to receive free meals for anyone under the age of 18.
Dates To Know:

Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right:)

Principal Fowler
IMPORTANT: Return to School Response Form
With the change of return dates:
- If you have already completed the form and you are not changing your response, you do not need to complete it again.
- If you have already completed the form and you are changing your response, please complete the form again.
- If you have not completed the form - please do so.
These forms provide important information to help plan appropriately for the students returning to school for each phase.
IMPORTANT--STANDARD BASE GRADING UPDATE:
As you know, Schoology is an online portfolio system that teachers are using to communicate to you and warehouse your notes as to the students' progress to date.
Thank you for your feedback and discussions about SBRC grades over the last few weeks. Moving forward, the county is making adjustments to the Standards Based grading on assignments and assessments to help with communicating student progress more clearly on individual assignments.
What is changing?
Moving forward, your child can now receive an SC on an assignment if they have demonstrated that they have mastered a particular skill connected to a report card statement. The report card will be the only piece of evidence that will reflect where they are in the learning process with the standards as a whole. This change will help the students and families understand their progress on individual assignments/assessments as they are working towards mastering the whole standard.
● Assignments/Assessments in Grade Book- Performance levels will show how your student performed on each piece of evidence (one piece of the puzzle) of the entire standard.
● Report Card- Performance levels will show where your student is in the learning process of the entire standard (whole puzzle).
Even though a student has Strong Command (SC) on all 1st quarter assignments, this does not mean they will have SC on the end of the year goal. This means that the student is on track with those specific assignments/skills. They can only receive a SC if the standard has been taught to its entirety (with some standards it takes the whole year).
Thank you for supporting your student in their learning journey. This small adjustment will help us all have a better detailed understanding as we track the learning of each student's progress and achievements of mastering the standards by the end of the year.
SC=Strong Command; PC=Partial Command; NY=Not Yet Meeting; NA=Not Assessed
