Community News, Information & Updates
National Special Education Awareness Day, observed annually on December 2, marks an important milestone in the history of education in the United States. This day commemorates the enactment of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a landmark law passed in 1975, that granted access to children with special needs to free and quality public education, and helped to reaffirm the importance of inclusive education. Before IDEA, many children with disabilities were excluded from public education or did not receive the support needed to succeed.
IDEA mandated that:
- Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE): Every child with a disability has the right to a free, quality public education that meets their unique needs.
- Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Students with disabilities receive tailored educational plans that outline specific goals, services, and accommodations to help them succeed.
- Least Restrictive Environment (LRE): Children with disabilities should be educated alongside their non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible.
- Parent and Student Rights: IDEA established procedural safeguards to involve parents in decision-making and ensure the rights of students with disabilities are protected.
Special Education Day not only honors the signing of IDEA but also acknowledges the ongoing efforts of educators, families, policymakers, and advocates who work to uphold the principles of inclusivity. On today we celebrate the progress made, acknowledge the challenges ahead, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every child receives the education they deserve.
