THANK YOU to all of the students, their families and their student success teams (friends, grandparents, coworkers, neighbors, etc) who showed support for our UELF Community. What a FUN event of color days, an afternoon of sunshine walking and donations galore from family and friends. The final numbers will be shared with the students during the Oct. 4 All School Assembly, then included in the following Newsletter and social media handles. Numbers towards students for minutes walked and donations are presently being counted. ONLY donations towards the school can be accepted and not towards a student. What class will will the Golden Shoe? What class will win a recess at Ladybug Park? Who will win a Pizza Lunch with Mr. Jose and Ms. Lewellan? Find out on Oct. 4th!

Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11:30am to 1:15pm. You will support students with transitions between lunch and recess. You get to help them open milk cartons, tear open snack packages and tease them about them feeding you lunch every day. It's a cute opportunity to engage with these spunky UELF Seawolves.

Looking for a place to volunteer?

Classrooms teachers are looking for parents to be fingerprinted and registered for field trips, special events, and classroom jobs. Get yourself set up so you're ready to be there when your student needs you.

Principal Lunde is looking for parent volunteers who would like to lead a game one day a week. This could be a Tag Session, Inside Board Games Room, Dance Party, Drawing Club, Book Club, etc. Pick Monday, Wednesday or Thursday from 12:15pm to 1pm. You will have 20 minutes with each grade band; grades 3-5 and grades 1-2. This will compliment our Friday Running Club and continues our goal of offering other activities for students. The volunteer needs to make a commitment to weekly site visits so I recommend a team taking this on. Contact Principal Lunde if you have an idea!

ALL volunteers must complete the CRPUSD Volunteer Registration Process, which includes fingerprinting. Please complete the application form and get yourself fingerprinted. This MUST be completed before you can volunteer. Once this is completed, you are clear for the duration of your child's school experience in CRPUSD, including high-school and middle school!

Communicating With My Teacher

As we dig into the 2nd month of school, classrooms are transitioning from building a foundation for a safe learning classroom environment, taking initial assessments to know where students are at the beginning the year to applying the agreed upon classroom norms to foster a collaborative learning environment and applying skills to content learning. The students are experiencing a need to show their stamina and focus to engage and participate in their learning. They are working hard and they are putting their strongest persons forward. It's tiring work! Students and staff are being held accountable to this deep and energy needing work.

What does this mean at home? Your kids are mentally tired and at home they will put their armor down and show big feelings. This means doing any kind of thinking work, like reading, finishing up a math page, adding a key detail to a project or practicing math facts could be a battle. I strongly urge you to talk with your classroom teacher about what you are seeing and experiencing at home. This conversation will allow you to hear from the teacher what the options are and learn age appropriate strategies for working with your child at home. Students will often give the context of home practice as everything is tonight when the homework practice might have been given for the week and expected to be worked on over the week. The more your teacher knows and understands the need of your child and the more you understand the intent of the teacher, the better decisions you can make with the child and a plan can be made for your child.

If your child is in 4th or 5th grade, I urge you to support the child talking with the teacher. This communication can be in person, a note or an email. Often students are uncertain about approaching an adult in front of their peers, so using another modality is helpful. It's also GREAT practice for the student to participate with the parent in the meeting with the teacher. This facilitates the student learning.

Join our community on Wednesday, Oct. 26th for a Family Math Night. Together we will brainstorm math routines for at home that support math fact fluency and tackling problem solving. This evening event is sponsored by ELAC and PTA. It is open to ALL UELF Families! Please share your needs/ideas in this GoogleForm to better inform the planning team.

School Attendance Celebrations

Beginning in October, classes will be celebrating 100% attendance, which includes getting to class on time. Being at school to participate in the full day supports the student to have access to their full day. The teacher can plan for the students being present all day and students strengthen their stamina to participate in their learning. When students miss school, arrive late or leave early, this disrupts the learning flow.

Please stay home when sick, however be consistent about attending school on other days. We are developing the habits of mind of perseverance, stamina and independence.

CRPUSD 5th Grade families are hosting games, prizes and beverages for the Rohnert Park Halloween Festival. Add this to your calendar! All proceeds go to sending 5th graders to outdoor education! If you are a 3rd, 4th or 5th grade parent interested in being part of the team who brings on the games. If you'd like to volunteer at the Carnival, please sign-up on the Sign-UP Genius.
