Celebrating Women's History Month
Spotlight on Rita Moreno
"Never be afraid to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone."
Whether on stage or screen, Moreno displays a deep commitment to illuminating the ability of the arts to transform people. She was a featured artist for many years on "The Electric Company," the highly successful children's education program. She broke racial and gender barriers through her portrayals of an Irish teacher, Italian widow, evangelist, English lady and southern belle, helping pave the way for non-traditional casting of Latinas. In 1993 Moreno performed at President Clinton's inauguration, and later that month accepted an invitation to return to Washington, D.C. to perform at the White House.
Rita Moreno Fun Facts
Academy Award
Rita was the first Hispanic woman to win an Academy Award. Rita Moreno has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, which is known as an EGOT. She is one of only a few people to achieve this feat.
Presidential Medal of Freedom
She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004. The award was given to Moreno in recognition of her contributions to the arts and her advocacy for racial and gender equality.
Barbie doll - Rita
The collectible Rita Moreno doll pays homage to the Puerto-Rican-born actress, singer, dancer, and EGOT winner who overcame barriers to chart her own path to stardom.
