Message from Ms. Gengras in Art
Hiawatha artists have been working on some fantastic projects!
Students across all grade levels have been exploring clay and learning about various clay processes, including slipping and scoring, in their art classes. Kindergarten and first-grade students are creating pinch pots. Although many choose to make monsters, they can transform their pinch pots into anything they like! Second-grade artists are working on coil pots, where they learn to roll consistent coils and shape them into their pots. Third-grade artists are constructing clay houses; while many students opt for mushroom-style houses for fairies and gnomes, they are free to make any type of house they envision.
Additionally, third-grade students recently completed a special art integration project. They expressed emotions from the Zones of Regulation by sewing emoji pillows. Students learned to thread a needle and use a running stitch to attach the pieces together. After stuffing their pillows with polyfill and sewing them closed, they presented their work at our latest Green Mountain Sing. During the presentation, third graders shared their knowledge about different feelings associated with each Zone of Regulation. They held up their pillows to represent each zone as they described it. It was wonderful to see all the pillows collectively illustrating emotions. I was especially touched by what Harlee-Reah said during the last line of the presentation: "Remember: There are NO BAD ZONES! We all experience a range of emotions and energy every day!" I am incredibly impressed with the sewing skills and presentation efforts of our third graders. Great work!

He will share expert training and safety protocol insights from his decades of experience, talk to how Hiawatha prioritizes student safety, discuss drills students are practicing, language to use to prepare students and talk to them about what they experience during safety drills, and answer parent/caregiver questions.
