Students and teachers recognized at FPS State Bowl
Congratulations to the following district students and teachers who were recognized for their amazing achievements at the 2024 Washington Future Problem-Solving (FPS) State Bowl!
- Riverview Elementary teacher Alison Kallstrom was named 2024 FPS Coach of the Year! From the event, “She is one of the most engaged coaches we have. She shows up to every coach meeting, asks thoughtful questions both in those meetings and outside of them, and her teams have consistently improved because of it. She's a true example of a coach who is in it for the program and the benefits it offers kids, even though she had no prior experience with the program before taking over coaching responsibilities. She also qualified several teams to state this year and one of Riverview’s teams placed 6th. She genuinely wants to see her students succeed and is a shining example of the future of Washington FPS's success and sustainability.”
- The Cascade View Elementary student team of Agastya Aniruddha, Kane Davis, Camden Ketz, and Griffen (Finn) McSweeney placed 2nd in the Junior Division Best Action Plan Presentations. Tracie Martin is the team’s teacher/advisor.
- The Central Emerson Elementary student team of Owen Anthony, Sebastian Kuntz, Eli Fabela, and Thor Middleton placed 3rd in the Junior Division Best Action Plan Presentations. Jennifer Norling is the team’s teacher/advisor.
- The Riverview Elementary student team comprised of Jay Sage, Rylan Duke, Jackson Balas, and Jameson Bender placed 6th in Junior Division Global Issues Problem Solving. Kallstrom is the team’s teacher/advisor.
More than 50 district elementary students qualified to participate in the 2024 FPS State Bowl held March 20-22 in Warm Beach. At the state FPS competition students researched challenges and solutions around the topic "Autonomous Transportation" as they looked at our transport needs, desires and realities changing due to global growth and increased connectivity.
Sonic Squirrels headed to world championships
The Sonic Squirrels, Glacier Peak High School's (GPHS) and Snohomish High School's (SHS) robotics team, competed in Portland last week at the Pacific Northwest FIRST Robotics Championship. The Sonic Squirrels were among 50 teams competing from Washington and Oregon. After three days of competition, the Sonic Squirrels finished the qualification rounds ranked 10th with their robot named Maestro. Although the Sonic Squirrels were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs, the team did win the Autonomous Award from the judges based on Maestro’s programming and performance at the event. This is the second year in a row that the Sonic Squirrels have received that award. With the Sonic Squirrels placement at the Pacific Northwest FIRST Robotics Championship and points earned in two other events, they finished the season ranked 17th out of 124 teams in the Pacific Northwest. That placement has earned the Sonic Squirrels a spot at the FIRST World Robotics Championship to be held April 17-20 in Houston. There, the Sonic Squirrels will compete with about 600 teams from 15 countries. The Sonic Squirrels advisors are teachers Sean Wilson (GPHS) and Matt Johnson (SHS). Bravo!

Join us in recognizing our Coaches of the Year!
- Congrats to Glacier Peak High School teachers and coaches Bryan Mossburg and Jordan Gere who were recently awarded the Snohomish County Wrestling Officials Association Coaches of the Year! This award is voted on by all Snohomish County wrestling officials and is given to the coach that best demonstrates commitment, sportsmanship, passion, and technical knowledge. Both coaches have been with the GPHS wrestling program since the school's inception, with Mossburg being the only head coach the program has ever known. Gere has also been a part of the program from the ground up, assisting the boys' program since 2008 and officially taking over the head coach position for the girls program this past season.
- Congrats to Snohomish High School teacher and coach Ken Roberts who was named the Everett Herald's 2023-24 All-Area Girls Basketball Team Coach of the Year. From the Herald - "After an 0-3 start, Roberts guided the Panthers to wins in 14 of their final 16 regular-season games, the Class 3A District 1 championship and a berth in the state semifinals. Snohomish advanced the furthest of any local girls teams at state tournaments and earned a fifth-place trophy. The Panthers dethroned three-time defending district champion Arlington in the process."
- Congrats to Glacier Peak High School coach Brian Hunter who was was named the Everett Herald's 2023-24 All-Area Boys Basketball Team Coach of the Year. From the Herald - "After taking a year off from coaching last season, Hunter returned to the helm and guided Glacier Peak to a 25-4 record this season, including a 7-1 mark in league play. The Grizzlies won the Wesco 4A title and reached the Class 4A state semifinals, securing a program-best third-place finish at the Hardwood Classic. The Grizzlies won 16 more games than a season ago when they went 9-10."
Student photographers receive awards in contest
Absolutely astonishing! Out of the 71 photographs chosen as award recipients in this year's 29th Annual Black and White Photography Student Exhibition at the Schack Art Center, an impressive 54, which makes up 76% of the winners, were captured by students from Glacier Peak High School (GPHS) and Snohomish High School (SHS)! Photography teachers are Christa Mallory (GPHS) and Jay Adams (SHS).
This year more than 170 students from grades 9-12 across Snohomish County submitted their black and white photographs to be considered by a panel of three artists. These three jurors made selections by looking for photographs that represent excellence in composition, creativity, and presentation. Jurors were impressed by the quality of all the work submitted, including the technical skill and emergence of personal vision. Click here to view the photographs of our district award winners.

Updated app launched for district transportation info
This spring, the Ride 360 app our district uses to provide our families with student transportation information will be migrated to a replacement app, My Ride K-12. You will need to download the new app to access updated transportation information for your child(ren).
The new app, My Ride K-12, is available to download now. Links to the new app are available below:
Usernames and passwords from Ride 360 will transition to My Ride K-12. Additionally, existing log-in information can be used to access a web version of My Ride K-12 at myridek12.tylerapp.com. April Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Arab American Heritage Month, Autism Acceptance Month, Month of the Military Child, National Volunteer Month
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Please join us this April as we acknowledge Arab American Heritage Month, Autism Acceptance Month, Month of the Military Child, and National Volunteer Month. As a reminder, though these months may be designated as times for specific recognitions, we encourage honor and recognition of our culture and diversity throughout the year.
Arab American Heritage Month was first nationally recognized in 2021. Estimates are that 3.7 million Americans have Arab roots and, in the Snohomish School District Arabic is the ninth most spoken language. The recognition coincides with Ramadan (March 10-April 9), a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s major holidays. During this time, Muslims around the world will fast from dawn to sunset as part of their spiritual practices.
Autism Acceptance Month is also recognized in April. The first national recognition occurred in 1972 with Autistic Children’s Week. Christopher Banks, President and CEO of the Autism Society of America, expressed the following about moving from awareness to acceptance: “While we will always work to spread awareness, words matter as we strive for autistic individuals to live fully in all areas of life. As many individuals and families affected by autism know, acceptance is often one of the biggest barriers to finding and developing a strong support system." This year also marks the 17th annual World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.
The Month of the Military Child was first recognized in April 1986 as a time to acknowledge children for their selflessness and sacrifice as they serve our country as part of a military family. According to Military One Source, the theme for 2024 is “Military Child: Brave, Fearless, and Resilient." The Military Child Education Coalition provides information and resources for children, parents, and educators to support children in military families.
National Volunteer Month and Global Volunteer Month are dedicated to honoring the importance of volunteers and their contribution to service. Beginning as National Volunteer Week in 1974, participation and activities continue to grow exponentially each year. This year, the week is being held April 21-27.
For more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link from pta.org.
