Community Update
March 8, 2024

Dear Syosset Community:
To be admitted to the A.P. Willits Elementary County Fair you have to have a ticket, and to get a ticket, you have to play “Kindness Bingo” – filling your squares with acts of kindness. I earned my ticket by: cleaning a room, doing an extra chore, smiling at someone and giving a compliment (P.S. I suspect my wife is in cahoots with Ms. Spicijaric and Ms. Goebel). Once I arrived at the Fair, I saw how students incorporated the lessons about both animals and kindness from Charlotte’s Web into their miniature farms.

Spotlight on Instruction 🔦
The world of journalism is evolving rapidly, so we’ve launched a new Broadcast Journalism course – teaching students to create content through real world applications. The experiential learning course is designed to give students an authentic introduction to the wide-ranging broadcasting industry including TV, radio, podcasting, and other webcasting platforms. The course began in September with an overview of sound journalistic principles and technical training. Students then developed the show concept and even branded a name for the production team: SYO Vision. After a few pilot episodes, the SYO Central morning show was launched in October! Students cover a wide range of stories from news, features and entertainment, to sports and beyond. Every student has a role in producing the weekly news show, from running cameras, editing video, field reporting, and anchoring. The class is a real news team!
This week’s broadcast will keep you up to date on things in the works – students have been writing a new female empowerment newsletter that comes out tomorrow and Prom tickets are on sale beginning Monday. Watch the episode below – and follow their YouTube channel to stay up to date.

Our High School DECA team just returned from Rochester where it was a #SyoSweep! Syosset brought home 11 first place medals along with 10 second place and 3 third place (in the state) finishes! Sixty-nine of our students qualified for the international competition. In all, our students brought home 182 medals and 56 students were Top 10 in NY. Syosset’s team was also recognized for their fundraising efforts on behalf of St. Jude's Research Hospital. Wow!
Krishiv Shah was elected New York State’s DECA Executive Vice President, and Audrey Chen was elected Vice President of Communications.
My big takeaway: #SyoBiz means business!!

Junior Johnny Xu has been named one of Long Island’s Best Artists by the Heckscher Museum. The museum’s annual Young Artists competition is the only one on Long Island that offers High School students the chance to display their work in a museum. Of the 456 works of art submitted, only 87 were selected to show. Johnny’s piece, titled “Awakening,” was created out of cut construction paper and will be on display in the museum beginning March 23rd. Congratulations, Johnny, on this accomplishment!
Village fifth grader Tyler Wang wowed an audience at Carnegie Hall with his skills on the piano. Tyler won first prize in the Concert Festival International Competition for his Piano Solo – and was selected to perform at Carnegie Hall this past weekend. He played Mozart’s Sonata #6. The organization, which offers unique opportunities for young musicians, was so impressed by his talent – they offered him a scholarship award for their Summer Europe tour, where he will be performing in Portugal and Austria. He also plays the violin and the flute in the Village orchestra and band. Wow! Congratulations, Tyler, on this amazing accomplishment!
South Woods eighth grader Ben Rosenzweig took a trip to Capital Hill with the Tourette Association of America. He joined over 300 children and adults to advocate for funding and important healthcare initiatives that directly support the Tourette community. Alongside 60 other kids from 39 states, Ben also trained to become one of the organization's youth ambassadors. He is now eligible to lead peer-to-peer workshops in schools to give students a deeper understanding of Tourette Syndrome. Amazing! Way to go, Ben!
Bright Spot
This week’s Bright Spots are shining all the way to Washington, DC. Three of our High School students have been recognized with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This is the most prestigious volunteer award associated with the White House, and is given to students who donate a significant amount of time to improving our world. Each awardee receives a medallion, an engraved certificate, and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States.
Sisters Irene (Jr.) and Olivia (Fr.) Chen volunteered at the Queens Public Library as summer reading assistants, and packed food and gardened with community organization Island Harvest. Sophomore Selena Chu also volunteered at Island Harvest, the Town of Hempstead, and has spent time at APEC (Alley Pond Environmental Center), helping with educational programs and animal care.
This just scratches the surface of all of these students’ amazing efforts… and I’m confident they are just getting started! Congratulations Irene, Olivia, and Selena on this accomplishment – and keep making our world a better place.
Don’t forget that this Sunday is Daylight Savings, and the clocks Spring ahead – a sign of more sunshine to come.
More Light, More Love
