Thames Valley Rippa Rugby Championships 2023
The Thames Valley Rippa Rugby Championship took place in wet conditions at Paeroa Domain on Wednesday. Schools from across the Thames Valley congregated for the annual best of the best championship. Stanley Avenue was strongly represented by a team in each division. The students had a thoroughly enjoyable day playing in the rain. Strong defence, teamwork and hard running were a feature of all of the Stanley Avenue teams. Special mention must go to our Year 7/8 Boys team, who went through pool play unbeaten and qualified for the final against Tairua. The final was an intense battle between two quality sides. With the score being locked at 2 all, Tairua scored the clincher with seconds left to go, winning 3-2. I couldn’t have been prouder of this team, who played some amazing rippa rugby all day!
Furthermore, our Year 7/8 girls played some great rippa rugby and made the semi- final just going down to Te Kauwhata College in a great battle. The Year 5/6 Boys also put in strong performances throughout the day to gain a respectable 4th place overall. In a tough competition our Year 5/6 Girls produced some good results, registered a win and showed great improvement throughout the tournament.
I would like to thank the following parents/ teachers for their help either with transport/coaching/managing.
Whaea Sammi, Dave Wood, Kaylee Baker, Vinnie Narayan, Jay Werahiko, Kristina Watts, Glen Waterman and Will French.
Ngā mihi nui
John Byers

Purchase your Own New SAS Sports Shirt!
We have just gone live on DirectGroup Uniforms with our new Sports Shirts that you are able to purchase. We feel moving forward this is a great option and will save a lot of time issuing and collecting sports shirts. At this time we still have our other sports shirts for anyone that is playing and has not purchased their own yet. Check them out at:
https://dgstore.co.nz/collections/stanley-avenue-school
You can purchase the sport shirts and they arrive directly to your address and they even have Afterpay so that it makes it possible to budget. We are looking forward to seeing these appearing on our sports fields.
Lost Property
Hi everyone, this is our lost property area, and nearly the end of term.
Most items are un-named, or have ex-pupils names so cannot be traced back to current owners.
If you are missing items, please check here and rename correctly if found. This makes it much easier to get back to students quickly , or for families to notice when items are not theirs.
Thank you.
Celebrating Matariki at Stanley Avenue School
Friday 21st July from 7.45 till 8.45 a.m. by Rooms 1-4
Come and help us celebrate the Māori New Year.
In Māori culture, Matariki is the name of the Pleiades star cluster and the celebration of its first rising in late June or
early July. This marks the beginning of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar.
This year it falls on Friday, 14 July 2023, which is during the school holidays.
Every year at Stanley Avenue School we celebrate Matariki, and like to involve our school community.
This year we are planning a Matariki Breakfast on Friday 21st July (Week 1 Term 3).
Who can come: All family members are welcome to attend, including siblings (pre-school and college) and parents.
Current Students can attend without family, with parental permission.
Breakfast will include: Weet-bix, cornflakes, fruit , waffles, sausages, bread, spaghetti and baked beans.
Tea, coffee, milo, water and juice will also be available
Vegetarian sausages are available if required-please let us know if you prefer this option.
Koha: In order to help us out with costs we would appreciate a gold coin donation per person, as a guideline
Please bring: To reduce our costs and our environmental waste impact, we encourage as many families as possible to bring their own cups, plates and cutlery.
Numbers: We need to do some forward planning so we are asking each family to indicate if you are coming to breakfast and we need replies back by Thursday 29th June. We will make a survey available through HERO next week, but will also have paper copies available at the office if needed. This is not binding, but helps us plan for catering.
We are still seeking sponsorship from our school and wider community to support us with this event. If you are part of a business or family who could help in any way please contact Chris Finucane/ Assistant Principal or John Byers /Principal.
Any assistance will be gratefully received.
Ngā mihi nui- Thank you!
Kaitiaki Garden Group
The gardens are looking fantastic with the hard work of our students. On Monday and Thursdays during lunchtimes, students join Whaea Adreena in the gardens to complete weeding, planting, aerating the soil, and general tidying up of the area.
Students have nominated a flower garden, 2 vegetable and herb gardens, a berry garden, and plans for a Rongoa garden (medicinal).
Whanau, please feel free to join us on these days (from 1.10pm) and share your expertise!
With the shortest day fast approaching, remember to get your garlic bulbs planted.
Garlic is one of the easiest and least fussy vege crops you can grow. It takes up hardly any room (width wise above the soil) and once planted it requires little care. Packed with flavour and health properties, it’s a superfood of the garden! Traditionally garlic is planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest day, however it can be planted in both autumn and winter.
If you wish to donate surplus plants, please contact Whaea Adreena. Nga mihi nui.
Matamata Piako Library School Holiday Activities
Coming up in July, we are hosting a reading challenge and school holiday activities for the tamariki of our district.
Matariki winter reading challenge: During July, Matamata-Piako Libraries will be hosting a reading challenge for children aged 5-15. The goal is to have children record reading for 14 days, and complete activities related to the stars of Matariki. We are using a new program to record reading for our reading challenges, called Beanstack. It can be downloaded as an app on a tablet or phone, or logged in to on a computer. Check it out here: Beanstack: Reading Challenges and Personalized Recommendations
School holiday activities: In the library, we will be holding drop-in activity sessions both weeks of the school holidays with each day having a free activity relating to one of the stars of Matariki. These are based on the activities of the winter reading challenge, but it isn’t necessary to be signed up to come along and participate. Holiday Programmes (matamatapiakolibraries.co.nz)
Uniform room is open Wednesday Mornings 8.30am - 9.30am
