Burkholder: The Jag Wire
Week of March 1-5, 2021
SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Last week, Supt. Jara announced a hybrid return to schools with a timeline. This announcement changed our school's testing plan so we closed the ability to accept responses for both parent surveys.
We are working hard to plan for the hybrid return of students and to revamp our school's testing plan. We will communicate with parents/guardians as soon as we have information to share.
Thank you,
Melissa Mendoza

This week is Reading Week!
Nevada Reading Week serves to promote a life-long love of reading. From students in Pre-Kindergarten listening attentively on a circle rug to their teacher’s riveting read-aloud to high school seniors engaging in rigorous discussions about a novel, the joy of reading is evident.
This year’s theme is Change Your World - Read!
Book Recommendation of the Week:
Beyond the Door, the first in the Time Out of Time duet from Maureen Doyle McQuerry, weaves a compelling coming-of-age story with fantasy and mythology. With his love of learning and the game of Scrabble, Timothy James feels like the only person who understands him is his older sister, Sarah, and he’s fairly certain nothing interesting will ever happen to him. But one night, while his parents and sister are away, the door opens, and mythical creatures appear in his own living room! Soon, a mystery of unparalleled proportions begins to unfold, revealing an age-old battle of Light against Dark, and Timothy must embark on a quest to prevent the Dark from controlling the future and changing the past. But he can’t complete the quest alone. Timothy has to team up with his sister and the school bully, Jessica, to face an ancient evil, and in the process, this unlikely trio discover they are each more than meets the eye.

That idea of inner strength felt like a natural theme to bring into our 13th annual Doodle for Google contest: The 2021 contest theme is “I am strong because…” We’re asking students to creatively share how they keep moving forward when things get tough. When you make mistakes or get scared, what helps you clear the clouds above your head? When people around you are feeling down, how do you use your inner strength to lift them up?
We are exploring our creative side with our art project.

Burkholder vs Del Webb
If you like Jeopardy, or trivia, this is the club to watch!! Coached by Mr. Oliver and Mrs. Wapneski, we play a Jeopardy type trivia game every week. We meet online after school, typically on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. The coaches ask the questions (sometimes we give hints) and the players race to buzz in, answer the questions and gain points for their team.
This year has been a little different. We are all online. We have learned a new buzz-in system that we will use at our matches against other middle schools in the district. We are learning how to collaborate on answers when we have a team question. Collaborating online is definitely different than when we can collaborate sitting right next to our teammates.
We have 5 fabulous trivia - brained students that meet every week to practice: Kaden B., Italia I., Odely R., Caitlyn R. and Meilea S. We practice while scrimmaging each other. Our first interscholastic scrimmage will be held on Tuesday, March 2. We will scrimmage Del Webb Middle School. Go JAGS!!!

It's hard to believe that the time is almost here for us to begin course planning for next school year! Mrs.(Cady) Burkhardt and Mrs. Bush have visited all 6th and 7th grade ELA classes and did a Course Planning and Career Exploration lesson with students. If you missed the lesson, it is imperative that you turn in your Google form for your elective choice. Here are the Google codes for your elective choices:
6th graders going to 7th grade- https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdb4cdQzDNABMYtc5erPFgTHvXCKyi9RtAu1RMA4h0lW5A2tw/viewform
