St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 3 | 15 MAY 2025
“O God, Come be with us today.
Fill our hearts with joy. Fill our minds with learning.
Fill our classrooms with peace. Fill our lessons with fun.
Fill our friendships with kindness. Fill our school with love. Amen.”
Dear Parents and Carers,
The term continues to progress positively, with students demonstrating strong dedication to their learning. The energy and enthusiasm throughout the school are commendable and greatly appreciated.
We extend a warm welcome to Pope Leo on his recent appointment as the Pope of the Catholic Church. We look forward to his spiritual leadership and pray for him as he embarks on this significant role.
We also wish Fr Nino a restful and enjoyable break as he takes three weeks of leave to travel. We look forward to his return, refreshed and renewed.
The Parish building project is progressing well, with completion anticipated within the next three weeks. Once finalised, student access to the bottom oval via the top playground gates will resume—an improvement that will streamline our daily operations.
Please keep our Year 6 students in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, 7 June and Sunday, 14 June. We acknowledge and appreciate the dedication of our teaching staff in preparing the students for this important milestone.
Thank you to all families who attended the recent parent-teacher meetings. Your engagement is highly valued, and we have received very positive feedback regarding the sessions.
I would also like to advise that I will be on leave during Weeks 8, 9, and 10 of Term 3 and Weeks 1 and 2 of Term 4. During this time, Mr. Yock will assume leadership of the school.
Please take note of the following key dates:
-
Friday, 30 May – Pupil-free day
-
Monday, 2 June – Public holiday
-
Thursday, 29 May – School Cross Country (bottom oval)
-

-
Friday, 6 June – St Columba’s Feast Day Liturgy at 9:00am, followed by mission fundraising activities during lunch
We are also pleased to announce an upcoming upgrade to the soft fall surface of the play equipment near the Kiss and Drive area on the top playground. This improvement will enhance safety and enjoyment for all students.
Lastly, I will be away next week from Monday to Thursday due to CEWA commitments. During this period, Mr. Yock will be Acting Principal.
God bless, and keep safe.

Walk Safely to School Day – Friday, 16 May
We’re excited to be taking part in Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, 16 May! This national event encourages all students, families and carers to build healthy habits, reduce traffic congestion, and support a cleaner environment by walking or riding to school where possible.
To help celebrate, our Year 6 student leaders will be at the Alexandria Street gate before school, handing out stickers to students who walk or ride.
Let’s get moving together and promote a healthy, active start to the day!

Library Ministry - Second Hand Book Sale
Please support our Library Ministry's second hand book sale to raise money for new library resources. What a great initiative!
Mary - the Month of May
May is traditionally devoted to Mary, our Mother. This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13th century. The practice of honouring Mary during the month of May has been especially recommended by the Popes. The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and inspiration, of everyone who, in and through the Church, seeks to be the servant of God.
CEWA Childsafe Framework
This framework of nine elements combine supporting a child safe culture, healthy and respectful relationships and extended guardianship in school communities, based on the latest research and recognised best practices. Over the coming weeks, we will be exploring each of the nine elements. Please view the video below for an introduction to the framework.
https://childsafe.cewa.edu.au/introduction-key-concepts/
What is the Element - Investigating and Reporting?
Following, or developing and implementing where required, processes that are transparent, fair and clearly understood by the community.
What does this Element look like?
1. CEWA Student Safety, Wellbeing & Behaviour Executive Directive and other CECWA policies are understood and used in investigative, reporting and recording procedures
2. School and CEWA staff recognise the roles of external agencies (such as police, Department for Child Protection and Family Support)
3. Teachers, staff and principals understand their responsibilities in all forms of child abuse, whether sexual, physical, emotional and/or psychological
4. When handling complaints, the wellbeing of the child or young adult is the priority and confidentiality is observed

DOSCA Footy Tipping Competition
Round 9 was full of nail-biters, with the closest average victory margin since 1970! If your tips didn’t land, don’t worry—you weren’t the only one caught off guard!
For the WA teams, West Coast came as close to a win as Harley Reid requesting a trade, but couldn’t quite get there. Meanwhile, Freo managed to lose at home to the Pies, proving the critics wrong - they don’t need to leave WA to find trouble!
