We've reached the final week of the school year already! This year has been rich with opportunities for growth, and we are incredibly proud of all our students. We are excited to see so many of our students for summer school in June!
Throughout the summer, please keep an eye on your email for any updates concerning the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. See you on August 14th for the first day of school!
Last Day of School & Field Day This Friday
This Friday is our eighth annual Field Day! Students do not need to wear uniforms on this day; instead, they are invited to wear comfortable, quick-drying clothing for fun during water games and other outside activities. Students may want to bring a second shirt just in case, but please do not wear swimsuits.
Thank you to the forty adults who have signed up to help at field day! We still need 15-20 volunteers to help, specifically to run stations. No background clearance is needed to help at field day, so all caregivers are encouraged to sign up today! Volunteers should park on the surrounding streets and check in at the volunteer table near the back door. Please do not enter the school building unless you have the appropriate background checks and have a volunteer job to do inside.
Friday is also the last day of school, and we will dismiss at the usual time of 3:30 pm. There will be no Camp Fire after-school program on the last day of school.
We hope that all of our families have a safe and cheerful summer!
Summer School Updates
Summer School is quickly approaching! We still have a few spots open, so if you would like your child to participate, please register as soon as possible. If a class is filled and you would like your child to participate, still register and your child will be put on a waitlist. You will be notified if a spot becomes available.
If you have not yet paid your summer school fees, please pay them as soon as possible. Cash/check payments should be dropped off at the front desk.
If you indicated that you'd prefer to pay through your Parent Portal, follow these directions:
- Log into your Parent Portal
- Click on "Fees"
- Choose "2024-2025" under School Year
- Click "Add to Cart" for all fees
- Click on "My Cart" and check out
If your plans have changed and your child can no longer attend or you cannot commit to 100% attendance, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer your child's spot to another student.
Middle School Summer School
Citizens teachers and leaders want to provide opportunities for middle school students to have the best transcripts going into a local high school. This year we are providing an opportunity for middle school students to earn a new 4th quarter grade for math and/or ELA. During summer school, students can participate in enrichment courses aligned with our curriculum. After students complete the required classwork and homework assignments, they can replace their 4th quarter grade. If you would like your student to participate, please complete Summer School Enrollment as soon as possible.
Even though there is a waitlist for Middle school, please complete the registration form as soon as possible. We will open another classroom based on enrollment numbers.
Please email Dominique Betts at dominique.betts@cwckansascity.org if you have any questions or concerns about summer school.

May Board Meeting Summary
Highlights from Thursday's board meeting include:
- The board approved the appointments of and welcomed Ms. Sophia Bond and Mr. James Brown to the board.
- The board approved the board meeting calendar for the next year.
- The Brand Identity committee gave an update on discussions with our national affiliate regarding our current licensing agreement. At this time, discussions are ongoing and no decisions have been made.
- Information was shared about a possible new building location. We are continuing to work with our consulting firm to determine affordability and feasibility of this new possibility, which lies within our geographic preference area.
- The Educational Equity committee reviewed 2023-2024 student behavior report data. During this initial review, general trends were discussed while the board acknowledged that more data is needed over multiple years for more useful analysis. The hope is that this data will be used to notice patterns, help students with appropriate interventions, and ensure interventions are successful to help students avoid missing instructional time.
- The board reviewed the monthly financials, and the 2024-2025 budget was approved, which includes a pay raise for staff who work directly with students.
- Updates about board member onboarding, a potential KCPS bond, 8th grade graduation, summer school, and 2024-2025 enrollment were shared.
Minutes from previous board meetings and other relevant documents can always be viewed on the Board Materials page of the website.
Camp Fire 2024-2025 Registration Open
Registration for the Camp Fire after-school program is now open for the 2024-2025 school year!
Camp Fire is available to registered students every day until 6 pm, even on Wednesday early release days! Due to an incredible grant they received last year, Camp Fire is available at no cost to our families. However, families need to commit to 90% student attendance in order to participate due to this funding, meaning that students should generally stay until 5:30-5:45 pm.
If you are in need of after-school care next year, please register as soon as possible so that Camp Fire can staff their program as accurately as possible. Similarly, if you register and then have a change in plans, please reach out to Camp Fire to notify them that you no longer wish for your child to be registered.
Click here to register your child(ren). If you have any questions, please reach out directly to Camp Fire at 660-539-7100 or email them at megan.mcmurray@campfireheartland.org
