NEWS AND NOTES - May 2024
LET'S CELEBRATE SCHOOL LUNCH HERO DAY!
Between preparing delicious food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, PASD nutrition staff have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, PASD schools will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 3. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s students each school day.
“School nutrition employees must juggle many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes for their dedication to fueling our students for success,” said Stephanie Bry, MDA, RD, Food Services Director.
Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day. We serve approximately 3000 meals a day and all students are provided meals at no charge under the Community Eligibility Provision.

PASD STUDENTS RETURN TO NATURE BRIDGE
We're thrilled to announce the revival of our 6th-grade field trips to NatureBridge! After a hiatus of several years, we're reconnecting students with the wonders of nature in Olympic National Park.
This program offers hands-on learning experiences for PASD 6th graders, focusing on forest ecology, watershed science, and more. NatureBridge educators lead students to explore old-growth forests, paddle on Lake Crescent, and work as a team to tackle team problem-solving challenges.
These trips are about learning, personal growth, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. We're excited to renew this tradition and partnership with NatureBridge.
TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK (MAY 6-10)
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week!
Let's take a moment to celebrate the incredible educators who dedicate their time, energy, and passion to shaping young minds and making a difference in our lives every single day. Whether they're teaching in person or virtually, their impact is immeasurable. Let's show our appreciation in big and small ways, because behind every successful student, there is a teacher who believed in them.
Please take a moment next week to thank or celebrate a teacher who you know has made a difference.
JEFFERSON 3RD GRADERS PUBLISH THEIR WRITING
The hard work of these students reflects all of our students' boundless potential, nurtured by dedicated educators like Melissa Holcomb and the rest of the Jefferson Elementary team. CONGRATS PAHS MUSIC STUDENTS!
Congratulations to our PAHS Chamber Orchestra students for their outstanding achievements at the recent state competition! Freshmen Sky Gelder and Joanna Minnoch made a remarkable debut, qualifying for state and earning praise from judges. Mikayla DeCou, Jonathan Roland, and Yau Fu also shone in the small string ensemble category.
In the highly competitive Large String Ensemble category, our orchestra delivered a standout performance, impressing judges with their focus and maturity. With a perfect score from all three adjudicators, we were within reach of a top 3 finish among 22 orchestras statewide! Feedback praised our selection of underrepresented composer Yasushi Akutagawa's music, highlighting our execution and engagement.
Let's give a round of applause to our talented students for once again showcasing excellence in string orchestra! And a big shoutout to Sean McDaniel and all our band and choir students for their achievements too! Check out the attached photos from the event
