Principal's Corner
Thanksgiving break is here again and I’m sure everyone, students, families, and CVS staff alike, are ready for the break. A lot has happened since the end of summer, and this time of year it always feels like we’ve been through a long stretch. There has been a very calm feel throughout the school this year, which is very good to see. Before meaningful learning can occur, a calm, steady, and positive atmosphere must first be established. We have worked hard to do just that, and it is satisfying to see the results of our efforts bearing fruit. Thanksgiving often ends up, like many holidays, as a time for running around trying to prepare for an invasion of friends and families. I hope this year we can all take some time to get some rest and remember the many things we have to be thankful for.
Happy thanksgiving,
Jason B. Lees

2nd Graders Time Travel to Ancient Greece
As part of our Core Knowledge Language Arts literacy program, the 2nd graders get to learn about many interesting things, including ancient civilizations! We just wrapped up our Ancient Greek unit where students learned about many of the contributions that we got from the Ancient Greeks including: democracy, architecture (columns), marathons, important works of art and poetry, the important ideas of famous philosophers and the Olympic games! We celebrated all we learned by dressing up like ancient Greeks and hosting our own Olympic games complete with a torch relay, speed "skating", "bobsledding" and a marathon! Students earned "gold" medals for their endurance and perseverance. Our time travel to Ancient Greece was fabulous!
Winter Reminder
This is just a friendly reminder that students need to come to school properly dressed for the weather. As the weather gets colder and wet, students need to have the following items: winter hat, mittens/gloves, scarf, snow pants, snow boots and a proper jacket. Thank you in advance!
Fire Safety with Newport City Fire Department
Halloween was about more than just candy and costumes this year for Coventry's Pre-K through grade 2 students as the Newport City Fire Department came to teach us about fire safety. We learned about the importance of having a meeting place in case of a fire, to stop drop and roll if our clothing is on fire, to stay away from matches and lighters and so much more! Students got to learn all about the safety gear that firefighters use and see them in their protective fire suits so that we are not scared if there is ever a real emergency. We even got to climb in the fire truck and pretend we were real firefighters! Newport City firefighters commented on how impressed they were by the knowledge that our students had as well as the great questions they asked! Thank you Newport City firefighters for visiting CVS!
Artist in Residency
Coventry Village School students were provided with an opportunity to participate in a weeks long Artist in Residency Program November 18th - 22nd. Jeh Kulu is a West African performance and educational ensemble bridging the spirit of West African music and dance to New England since 1993.
"We teach about African culture, music, and dance, getting people up on their feet so they have the opportunity to learn traditional dances and rhythms.
Bringing hands-on experiences into the classroom is a great way to share information, engage students in interactive learning, and open hearts and minds. Our residencies foster greater self-esteem through positive risk taking, cooperation with peers, and empathy and respect for others. "
We would like to send a big THANK YOU to the Coventry Town Foundation for making this opportunity possible!
