Principal's Pen
Hello MES Sea Lion Families,
We are entering our final 5-day school week. We have a few 4th and 5th graders wrapping up State/Federal Testing, so we will maintain our quiet hours of 8:30-10 each morning. Teachers are working on report cards and I’ll be reviewing all of them. Teachers are closing out year-end units and starting to break down classrooms too. Diane is working to keep our campus tidy and orderly, supporting the set-up of our new second kindergarten room, and all the subsequent room moves for Occupational Therapy, Wellness, Music, and perhaps even a dedicated Science Room. Kim is busy enrolling new students. We are up to 208 students and possibly 250! I am working with HR on getting us additional teachers but until our enrollment goes up, we just won’t know. Andrew is hunting down checked out library books and organizing curriculum for next year. And, in fact all of us are really busy with the regular workload too!
It is a very busy time of year for staff but also it’s a time to take stock and feel proud of what we have all accomplished for our students.
I can see in our students’ eyes that they are getting excited for the lazy days of summer, and that they are getting sentimental about the close of the school year and all the good times they have shared together. They continue to apply themselves to their academics and enjoy their sense of personal growth.
Thank you for your partnership,
Proud Principal Chris Hertz

Articles for Parents
Pali Camp - Donations Needed
We are excited for our 2024 - 2025 5th grade class to again have the opportunity to attend outdoor school in October 2024. Outdoor school is perhaps the greatest highlight of elementary school for many students and is a sort of rite-of-passage. We are asking 4th grade parents to donate now so that we may make our next installment payment.
Thank you to teacher Tracy Kooy for leading the annual fourth grade parent orientation to outdoor school back in April. Thank you to all the parents who turned out. Parents decided to not fundraise, but rather to make voluntary donations to cover the $20,795 trip.
Thank you to the twenty (20) families who have donated. So far we have collected $10,880. We need at least sixteen (16) more donations to be able to make our third installment of $8,200 by the September due date. See Group Payment Schedule below for more details.
All or None
If we don’t raise enough funds for ALL students to participate, we will ask the PTA to fund the difference. If there is not enough available funds or support from PTA, then the trip will be canceled; we will refund all donations but lose our original PTA deposit. Also, to help prevent canceling the trip, any families who won’t be able to voluntarily contribute the full $520 will be asked what if anything they can donate. Perhaps $300, $200 or $50? Anything helps. Finally if there are families who would like to cover another student, we will accept donations above and beyond $520.
Trip Date
Trip date: 10/16/24-10/18/24.
Group Payment Schedule
MES must make installment payments dates to Pali Camp:
June ($7,315)

Private School Recommendation Letters
As a district we are respectfully declining to write letters of recommendation for students applying to private schools. We want to best use our limited time and resources for activities that impact all of our students in our schools. Writing letters takes us away from our work with our students.
If you are applying to a private school for your child, we will send a form letter to the school
explaining our reasoning, and that the district’s lack of recommendation letter in no way suggests a negative reflection of your children. Teachers will not be completing recommendation letters nor will they be completing any checklists. We can provide report cards, and any information already in your child’s file; however, teachers will not create any new information or provide anytype of recommendation for private schools.
We believe students who have attended MES are well positioned to be a positive addition to
any school community– and we hope you will all continue to consider SMMUSD school options
as wonderful learning environments for your children.
Regardless, we always wish our students all the best. Thank you for your understanding.

5th Grade Red Nose Red Bake Sale Update
Ms. Kooy’s 5th graders have taken on a service project – we are teaming up with Comic Relief US to help end children’s poverty!
We kicked off our fundraiser with a BAKE SALE/CRAFT FAIR in the MES courtyard during Open House and it was a great success. Thank you, MES!
There is still time to donate and do our little part to make a big difference! Please consider donating to the MES Fundraising Page to support this amazing organization and let’s help end children’s poverty one red nose at a time! For any questions about how you can help further, please contact Ms. Kooy at tkooy@smmusd.org.
