HMS News
Happy Holidays!
As we begin our December break this afternoon, we'd like to wish every member of our HMS community a happy holiday season and a healthy new year!
We hope you have a restful and relaxing break, and we'll see you in 2025!
Congratulations to our Patriot's Pen Essay Contest Winners!
Left to right: Ryan Fernquist (3rd), Evangeline Covin (2nd), and Henry Beisel (1st).
And a huge thanks to Mrs. Sullivan for accompanying our winners to the ceremony this past weekend!
Lincoln Day Essay Contest
You are invited to participate in the Hingham Historical Society's Annual Lincoln Day Essay Contest!
Each year, we celebrate civic engagement and reflect on the lives and legacies of two very famous Lincolns - General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) and President Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865) - who served their country in meaningful ways.
As we kick off the 250th anniversary celebrations of American Independence (1775-2025), we want to hear from YOU about how these Lincoln legacies shape our communities today and will continue to do so in the future.
Please see the attachment for complete details.
Team Great White Sharks Thanks You for Your Generosity!
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parents, students, and members of our community who contributed to our book drive this holiday season. Thanks to your incredible generosity, we were able to donate over 1,000 books to the Christmas in the City Foundation and other organizations that support children and families in need.
Bon Appétit
Sra. Manning and Sra. Fossi had a wonderful time making crêpes with their students during the World Culture Club meeting recently.
Students learned that making crêpes can be a little tricky, and came to truly understand the French saying, “La première, c'est pour le chien.”, which translated means, “The first one is for the dog.”
After some practice, students were able to make their own delicious snacks!
So much spirit at HMS this week! Thanks to all who participated!

Backgammon with the Barracudas
The Barracudas have been reading the memoir On Two Feet and Wings by Abbas Kazerooni.
In his memoir, Abbas learns to play Backgammon as a way to pass the time while living alone in Istanbul. The Barracudas had the opportunity to learn how to play Backgammon themselves, connecting with the story in a fun and interactive way!
Small Ensembles Concert
The HMS/HHS Small Ensembles Concert will take place on Thursday, 1/9 at 7pm at HMS. This event features the advanced, audition-based after-school ensembles HMS/HHS jazz band, HMS/HHS Chamber Players and HHS Chamber Winds.
Please join us for an evening of music!
Happy Holidays from Health Class
Every holiday season, students have the opportunity to share their love and wishes with hospitalized kids. Students recently participated in a lesson on self-esteem and discussed ways to boost our self-esteem and self-confidence.
Among many ways to do so, doing something nice for others and practicing kindness certainly builds confidence and makes us feel happier. These cards are mailed to Cards for Hospitalized Kids in Chicago, IL, where they are then separated and sent out to different hospitals nationwide.
The kids did a wonderful job creating cards and sharing heartfelt messages during this holiday season.
Thank you to Mr. Landis and the HHS Chorus for visiting the middle school and helping us get in the holiday spirit before break.
Grade Eight students, keep Chorus in mind for next year!
Grade Eight Science
In eighth grade science classes, students have been learning about genetics. As part of that study all the classes extracted genetic material (DNA) from plants (a strawberry) this week.
This lab procedure assisted them with answering their driving question "Do plants contain genetic information?".
A Different Type of "Reducing" in Math
The Pirate team created scale drawings using heat shrink film (AKA Shrinky Dinks). Take a look at their before and after artwork.
Where Do You Come From?
Recently our eighth graders interviewed relatives and wrote Ancestor Poems based on what they learned. Below is one example of the excellent work done by our students
