LMS Blue Jays!
I hope everyone is having a great week. We're having fun at LMS today, enjoying all the creative and fun costumes students and staff wore.
Several of our students were honored at the Liberty Education Foundation breakfast. A select group of students from Ms. Green's and Mrs. Groebe's classes collaborated with the nonprofit organization Walkin' and Rollin' to design Halloween costumes for two students who use wheelchairs. The grand reveal of these costumes took place Saturday night in downtown KC. Additionally, our 6th-grade orchestra performed a piece they learned from Diana Ladio of the Elders. The Liberty Education Foundation generously gave LMS two grants to support these enriching experiences.
Students who have not opted out will take part in the Signs of Suicide training on Monday and Tuesday. Each grade level will engage in an age-appropriate program focused on the ACT approach: Acknowledge, Care, and Tell a trusted adult. Additional information is provided below.
Be sure to scroll down for information on upcoming events.

DUDE BE NICE WANTS YOUR EXTRA HALLOWEEN CANDY!
Every spring Dude be nice does an egg hunt for the staff before spring break. We would love to take any of your extra Halloween candy that you don't pass out to use for that event. Any individually wrapped candies that would fit in a plastic egg would be very appreciated! You can send it to LMS with your student and they can turn it in to Mrs. Curtis in the main office! THANK YOU!
Signs of Suicide (SOS)
When: 8th grade on November 4th and 6th and 7th grade on November 5th
On Monday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 5th LMS will be showing a short age appropriate video clip followed by a review of the warning signs and symptoms of depression and suicide and what to do if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. The video clip and survey will be administered during their advisory classes. Following this presentation students will be asked to complete a brief google survey which will ask whether they would like to talk to an adult about any concerns. The results of this survey will go directly to our counseling and social work department to follow up with any students requesting assistance. After reaching out to these students, parents/guardians will be contacted.
If you wish to have your student OPT OUT of this activity please call Mrs. Quarles, our school social worker, at 816-736-5410 ext 2010 or send an email to becca.quarles@lps53.org.
On the mornings of their SOS date, we will ensure the students who are opted out are not in advisory and working in an alternative setting during that time.

Meet our Staff
Mr. Robert Rawie- Physical Education & Social Studies
Mr. Rawie is from Liberty. He has a degree in Physical Education from Northwest Missouri State University. He started his career in public education 2 years ago here at LMS. He states , " Having the opportunity to be a positive influence and role model for the students in LPS is more than enough motivation to be in this career! Helping students succeed and helping them achieve their goals is what it is all about, there is no greater feeling than seeing a student light up with joy when they accomplish something." Coach Rawie got married this last June. He enjoys coaching football, basketball, and track. He loves to cheer on the chiefs and watch new shows and movies with his wife and two dachshunds.
Ms. Lyndsey Martin- 8th Grade ELA
Ms.Martin is originally from Maryville, Missouri. She has been in education for 27 years and this is her 21st year at LMS. She has a B.S. in Middle School Language Arts and a Master in Reading from Northwest Missouri State University. She states , ""I got into teaching because of the impact my 8th grade ELA teacher had on me as a student. I discovered how much reading great books, and writing my own stories meant to me because of her. I love teaching specifically the 8th grade level, because students are hilarious, they understand my humor, and can throw sarcasm around like confetti. I also enjoy building relationships with my students, so they understand what they are capable of in ELA, but learn that it takes work to reach that potential. I find setting high expectations and accountability are key to building lifelong learners and overall good people, Truthfully, I find that 8th graders really do appreciate when a teacher cares enough to give them both. Seeing how proud kids are when they reach success through hard work is the best feeling for me, as their teacher." Ms. Martin enjoys spending time with her sons, traveling with family and friends, reading, and hanging out with her dog, Cash, in her spare time.
