May Newsletter for CAPEA
Message From the CAPEA President
Dear CAPEA Community,
In this month's newsletter, we celebrate a significant victory for educational leadership in California. Thanks to our collective efforts, AB 2222, a bill with potentially detrimental consequences for equitable leadership practices, has been defeated. This achievement underscores the power of our community to advocate for policies that align with our values and priorities. Please view the newsletter created below. I would like to extend gratitude to Dr. Noni Reis and Dr. Carmen Beck for their hard work on developing the content of the letter. CAPEA continues to stand with the California Association of Bilingual Educators (CABE) on this important matter.
While celebrating this success, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing equity and social justice in educational leadership. Our work goes beyond defeating harmful legislation; it's about creating inclusive, equitable environments where every student has the opportunity to thrive. We will continue to advocate for policies and practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in our schools and communities. Perhaps most importantly, we recognize the power of collective action in driving positive change. By coming together as a community of educators, scholars, and advocates, we can amplify our impact and create meaningful change at the local, state, and national levels. Together, we can build a future where every student has access to a high-quality education and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
As we look ahead to the future of educational leadership, let us hold onto hope and optimism. Together, we can overcome challenges, embrace opportunities, and create a brighter future for generations to come.
Thank you for your dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence in educational leadership. Your contributions are truly valued and appreciated.
Warm Regards,
Dr. Ursula Estrada-Reveles

How CAPEA Collaborated with CABE to Defeat AB 2222
On Friday, March 22, we invited Jan Guftanson-Corea, Senior Consultant at the California Association for Bilingual Education, to our CAPEA Board Meeting. We learned of the proposal for AB 2222 (Rubio), as amended on March 18, 2024. This bill was intended to create a statewide framework for all reading instruction that adheres to the science of reading (SOR).

Getting to Know Our New Members
Dr. Manuel Ponce is a faculty member at Loyola Marymount University where he teaches in the educational leadership program as an adjunct professor. It was such a pleasure to get to know him!!!! He grew up in a Bracero camp in the San Fernando Valley with his brother and father and eventually his mother joined them. He has many fond memories of this time. In fact he shared how his father became to cook and in a spirit of entrepreneurship took every opportunity to celebrate their Mexican heritage. He told me about the palo en sebo games that his father held there. He also discussed how he was discriminated against when his school went to visit the UCLA campus and refused to take him along. Being the tenacious young man that he is, he drove himself to the campus and learned about the EOP program and was shortly after admitted to the university. The rest is history!!!! Welcome to CAPEA Manuel!
