A Message from the Principal...
Dear South Families,
This week has been busy and I am starting to get antsy for the weather to warm up. In my spare time, I like to golf so the warmer weather brings an anticipation for golf season to start. I joined three different golf organizations so that I have a community of people to golf with. It gives me something to look forward to and people to connect with.
At South we have over 50 clubs that students can get involved with, find a community of people with similar interests, and find connections. If your child is not connected in some way to a club or school organization, I highly recommend they try out one of our many clubs. You can find a list of clubs HERE. If there isn’t a club on this list your child is interested in, have them stop by and see Mrs. Petz in the Student Activities office (located across from the auditorium and Commons) and she can work with you to start one that interests you!

Important Class of 2025 Information
Hello Parents of the Class of 2025:
Below you will find a link for ALL Seniors to complete. There is pertinent information in this survey that we need to gather prior to Graduation. Please remind your student's to complete this form no later then Monday, May 5th, 2025.
Student Shout Outs!
Recently we have had quite a few requests for students from other schools to shadow for part of the day at South as they consider making South their home school. I want to recognize the efforts of South students who make themselves available to have a student shadow them for part of the day. I know when prospective students leave, they alway say they enjoyed their time with the South student. Thank you to all of the South students for their time and effort to showcase South.
Do you have a student shout out or accomplishment I could recognize? So many of our students have some meaningful accomplishments away from school and I would love to know about them. Please share them with me via email - parravc@gpschools.org

Spring Parent Teacher Conference Information
Spring Virtual Parent-Teacher Conferences - Sign up - February 27, 2025
Spring conferences are approaching and will be held virtually on Thursday, March 13th from 5-8pm by appointment. The sign up will be emailed to parents at 6am on February 27, 2025. In the spring, conferences are only held for one night, meaning that spots are limited. We kindly ask that you consider the following prior to signing up for conferences:
Academic / behavioral need: is your child’s academic and behavioral performance satisfactory? If so, we ask that you reserve conference slots for parents whose children need additional support.
Has the teacher requested a conference? Your child’s teacher will reach out to you individually if they feel a conference is necessary. If you do not hear from them, it is safe to assume that a conference is not needed.
At GPS, we value our strong partnership with parents and their eagerness to play an active role in their child’s education. Thank you for continuing to be one of the many things that makes South great!
Any questions, please contact Ms. Parent - parentk@gpschools.org
Information from the Assistant Principals
........ Dr. Hyliard & Ms. Parent
Sleep is Essential
Getting enough sleep is essential for teenagers’ health, academic performance, and overall wellbeing. In Ms. Parent's psychology classes each semester, South students regularly report that many of them average 5-6 hours per night, whereas experts recommend teenagers get 8–10. Busy schedules, screen time, and late-night homework get in the way, but students can find ways to engage in good habits to ensure they are getting as much sleep as they possibly can.
To build better sleep habits, students should:
- Aim for a consistent bedtime, even on weekends, to help regulate their body's internal clock.
- Limit screen time at least an hour before bed. It is recommended that students sleep with their phone in a different room to avoid the temptation of endlessly scrolling
- Engage in a calming, non-electronic activity before bed such as meditating, reading, coloring, etc.
- Avoid naps altogether and caffeine in the afternoon
- Keep their phone away when working on homework. The absence of distraction will make their homework take significantly less time, thus giving them more time to sleep.
