From Conversation to Change: Empowering Students Through Focus Groups
Student focus groups are structured group discussions with students that aim to gather their insights, opinions, and experiences about their school environment, learning experiences, and overall well-being.
These sessions are led by FACE facilitators, administrators, and site team members who ask open-ended questions and encourage students to share from their head and heart, in a supportive and affirming setting.
Purpose of Student Focus Groups for Community Schools
Voice & Empowerment: It gives students a platform to express their views and to be heard.
School Improvement: This aids our school leaders, identify what’s working well and what needs improvement from the students’ point of view.
Equity & Inclusion: It highlights the experiences and truths of student groups to ensure all voices are heard and represented.
Feedback for Programs: We evaluate or improve academic programs, extracurricular activities, mental health resources, and cultural initiatives.
Who Participates?
Students self nominate themselves based on presentations about the opportunity in the class or during assemblies. Other students are selected to reflect the diversity of the school. Groups might be organized by grade level, academic interests, or shared experiences.
Outcomes
Findings from focus groups often lead to actionable changes that reflect student needs and interests, like revising procedures, creating new programs, or increasing student support services. Soon you may see signage at the front of your school that reflects a students feedback. Be on the lookout.🙂
