WMS Friday Forecast

Every once in a while I encounter a parent who has a belief that school is an "us v. them" game to be won. I have never believed that we are here to win anything. We are here for one purpose: to make sure our students (your kids) get the best education possible in a safe environment. This should always be a win-win relationship. No one has to lose for kids to win.

The support that our parents show their child, our teachers, and our school community is vital. If kids hear their parents bad-talking a teacher or our school, that tends to degrade the relationship between the child and their teachers.

There are a few things that you can do to help build a supportive relationship between the school and the home:

1. Have a "problem-solving mindset" rather than a "blame mindset". Form questions that are curious in nature and help get to the root of the issue.

2. Make calls to teachers rather than email. But don't do it if you are angry. Wait for a while and make a request for a conversation. Hearing each other's voices is important in interpreting a message.

3. Come on in and meet. Face to face meetings, with a student in the room, can be a really productive way to solve problems together.

4. Understand that there are different perspectives to an incident or issue. Middle school students sometimes have misperceptions that are not accurate. (Like when they tell you to stop yelling at them when you have never yelled but have just been angry.)

5. Know that we view our parents as good parents doing good work with their kids, and we hope that you know that we are good people doing good work for your kids.

6. Understand that like you, we sometimes make mistakes. When we do, we will apologize and do our best to fix the mistake.

7. Please don't bash a teacher or school in front of your kids. Nothing good comes from a child hearing that.

The partnership and support we get from our RedHawk parents and guardians is vital to our success and vital to the ongoing learning of our students. Let's continue to build that positive relationship!

Please take a few moments and complete the district parent survey. A reminder was sent yesterday to all Special Education student’s families via ParentLink. Your voice is critical and this is a great way to share their feedback regarding your experience with special education services in D303!

The WEB leaders will be hosting our Annual Sixth Grade Hide and Seek Competition Friday November 12th from 3:45pm - 5:00pm. This is a good opportunity for 6th graders to meet new people and see some new places in the building.

Students can pick up a permission slip from their team leader or print attached PERMISSION SLIP and return to the Student Services office or one of your core teachers by November 10th.

In District 303 we believe that families are the strongest partners we have to support our students’ education. We are excited to welcome volunteers back into District 303 buildings to assist with a variety of classroom and school activities.

As a public school district, we are required to comply with the Governor’s Executive Order relative to COVID-19 mitigation steps in all district buildings. These steps will keep our students, staff members, and volunteers safe while they are in our schools. Given that, all volunteers must:

• Provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test received within 72 hours of arriving to volunteer. If using a stick home test you need to show the stick to the school.

• Bring documentation to the front office upon arrival

• Wear a properly fitting mask at all times while in the building

• Complete the Volunteer Information Form prior to the first time you volunteer

Our students and staff members appreciate your willingness to volunteer your time!

Staff, students, and parents are encouraged to help digitally document this year in the yearbook. We offered this opportunity to our families last year and loved the many submissions we received.

PLEASE NOTE ON YOUR CALENDAR!

If your child is quarantined due to Covid, our teachers will send work to your child and work with you and your child as we always have when a child is out of school. We want to recognize that quarantine offers some unique challenges for our students.

We will be offering instructional support through a certified teacher during quarantine. Ann Rose, a recently retired D303 teacher, will be available to support our quarantine students through Zoom. When a child begins quarantine, we will email both the child and the parent with information on how to access Mrs. Rose's Zoom for support. We encourage our quarantined students to access this instructional support!

The beloved movie is now a Broadway musical, and this Junior version is perfect for young actors and audiences of all ages! The story follows Shrek, an ogre with a big chip on his shoulder, on his quest to rescue Princess Fiona in order to appease the cantankerous Lord Farquaad, and get his swamp back. But with a wise-cracking donkey, a feisty and strong princess with a big secret, and a myriad of fairy tale characters, this story will satisfy audiences in their quest for fun!

Shows will take place live and in-person at the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin. Masks are required to be worn by all audience members over the age of 2. Seating will be socially distanced, and a limited number of tickets are being sold to each performance. Thank you for helping us bring back theatre safely! We hope to see you at the show!
