August Cyclone Watch
August 2024
Greetings from the Admin Team π
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at JMS! My name is Jacob Adams and I am proud to serve as the principal at Jeff, a place that holds a special spot in my heart. Joining me on our administrative team is Mrs. Hilary Trammell who is starting her first full year as our assistant principal and Mr. Jeremiah Settles who is joining us as our administrative assistant. Together we are excited to lead this building into a new school year full of that same high achievement that we have come to expect at JMS.
Again, welcome to another great year at JMS. Please feel free to contact me at jadams@cpsk12.org or at 573-214-3210. Be sure to follow our JMS instagram account @jmscyclone.

Online Registration π»
If you haven't already, please complete your student's online registration as soon as possible. You should have received email communications from Columbia Public Schools (CPS) <cpscomm@cpsk12.org> regarding Back-To-School Registration & User ID and Password Information. These emails provided directions for completing the required annual registration along with your Guardian ID.
The links to begin online registration are below:
It's time to complete the annual school registration process. Below you will find items and information you will need to begin the 2024-25 school year, including information on completing the annual registration process, school supplies, transportation, and more.
The first step is to complete your scholar's annual registration information via the CPS Families Portal.
To begin, log in to the CPS Families Portal with your CPS-issued guardian ID and password.
Your guardian ID and/or password information can also be found at the CPS Families Portal Username and Guardian Email Check.
You should have also received a separate reminder email with account information to assist you.
Phones at JMS π±
JMS is a no-phone campus during the hours of 7:25-2:35. Students are not able to use or access phones while in classrooms, hallways, restrooms and all other school areas. Students are able to use their cellular device in the physical cafeteria only during their assigned lunch period.
Our goal is to provide a learning environment that is free from distractions and provides scholars the opportunity to engage in real-time collaboration with their teachers and peers. This communication allows all stakeholders to stay informed, and engaged, so we can partner together and provide a positive and productive school experience for all students within Columbia Public Schools. If you have any questions or need further clarification on any aspect of the cell phone procedures, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
Welcome Back Open House π
JMS will hold an open house night on August 14th from 5 to 7 pm. This is a great chance to come in and check out your schedule, walk through the building, get acquainted with nutrition services and get your online portal taken care of if you had run into difficulty. We will have opportunities to sign up for PTA and an ice cream social from PTA.
Back to School Night π
Our Back to School Night is August 27th from 6-8pm. This is an opportunity to get familiar with JMS and your student's teachers. During the event, you will have the opportunity to experience your student's schedule for the day and spend about 10 minutes with each teacher in groups. It is not intended for individual meetings with teachers. If you need to meet with your student's teacher individually, we encourage you to contact them directly and set up a time.
Cyclone Athletics πππππ»ββοΈ
Parents and guardians of JMS athletes,
Welcome to what we are sure will be an amazing fall sports season at Jefferson Middle School. Coaches at JMS have always said that sports are about more than just competition. Learning teamwork and responsibility to coaches and teammates is a huge part of what makes athletics great. We need to work together as coaches, parents, and student-athletes to make this season work.
Our Fall sports seasons start on Monday, August 19th. All student athletes must have a current sports physical (found on our website) and proof of insurance to participate in Columbia Public Schools athletics. Please make sure to complete all parts of the physical form and submit a copy to the main office or coach. Physicals are now good for 2 years.
Here is information you need to know for the first day of practice and thereafter.
All Sports (cheerleading, cross country, football, and volleyball):
Athletes need to bring the following to each practice:
1. A great attitude!
2. A water bottle or thermos clearly labeled with studentβs name.
3. Appropriate workout clothing and shoes.

Our practices will mainly be on the lower field well away from the school building. Football players are encouraged to bring water in a gallon jug or thermos to get them through all or most of a 2-hour practice.
August 29th @ 5:30PM
Fall Sports Parent Meeting - for parent/guardian of any student participating in volleyball, football, cheerleading, or cross country. At least one parent/guardian needs to attend. There will be information about joining our booster club and season passes for the school year. We will also break up into our respective teams and discuss expectations, schedules, etc.

Again, it is our goal to get all students involved in activities and athletics at Jefferson Middle School. Research indicates a high correlation between student involvement in extracurricular activities and achievement levels. The Athletic Department of Jefferson Middle School looks forward to working with you and your student this upcoming year.
We are all in this together.
Sincerely,
.

CYCLONE NATION!!!!
From the Nurse's Office π
Hello JMS Parents and Guardians,
My name is Jenny Grider and I am the School Nurse here at JMS. Our health room is staffed by myself and the wonderful Ms. Sheryl, our health secretary. Please feel free to reach out to us at any time when it comes to your student and their health needs. I just wanted to share a few dates and reminders as we are gearing up for another great school year. These are some tips that can help your student be the most successful!
- Middle school students CAN carry over the counter (OTC) meds in their bookbag. 1-2 doses in the original packaging (no zip lock bags). Students cannot share meds. CPS Medication Policy
- If you would like OTC meds kept in my office for your student, you must provide the medication, sign our medication administration form and have your doctor provide a note that includes the medication name, dose and frequency.
- I cannot provide OTC medication to your student.
- All Prescription medications must be checked into the health office with a signed medication administration form. It cannot be in their backpack. I will be available to receive medications at Schedule Pick up night on 8/16 or you can come by the health office during regular school hours. Please reach out if you need other accommodations.
- Of course there are exceptions for inhalers and epi-pens. Those may be self-carried in middle school as long as we have paperwork from your doctor and a signed self-carry form from you.
- If your child has a known medical condition that requires an emergency plan at school, please reach out to your provider and ask them to send me a new plan for this year. Ex: Asthma, Diabetes, Severe allergies (food/insect), etc.
- Personal hygiene: This is tricky in middle school as bodies and hormones are changing rapidly! Deodorant, Feminine Hygiene products and a change of clothing are beyond helpful! I have a large shelf in my storage area where students are welcome to leave a bag of clothing with their name on it.
- Here is a link to the CPS Illness guidelines for quick access. CPS Illness Guidelines
