Herman E. Dummer
September 2024
Welcome!
First of all, I want to thank you all for such a great start to the school year. Students are getting here on time and have followed directions well. The first bell rings at 7:55 and students should be in their classes by 8:00. The dismissal bell rings at 2:55. Drop-offs and pick-ups have also gone well thanks to all who have followed the directions of where drop-off/pick-up areas are. Just a reminder to stop at the crosswalk right in front of Dummer if any students/adults may be crossing. Arrivals and dismissals can be pretty hectic and we want everyone to be safe. We do have 2 crossing guards; 1 on the corner of Hall and Wells, and the other in front of the middle school.
Our students just took the first round of FastBridge testing. We use this data to help focus on the needs of all our students. This guides our teaching and lets us know where each student may need encouragement, academic support or enrichment, and/or help with any social/emotional areas that we may be able to address in a school setting. Our goal is to help each student improve from where they are so they can compare how they started to how they end the year, hopefully causing excitement from all as we see this individual growth from all their hard work. We appreciate your help, your support, and your patience as we travel through this school year together. Thank you for working with us to help make dreams come true!
Pick-Up/Drop-Off Reminder
Please park on the north side of the middle sidewalk heading to Dummer's front doors on Wells Street heading towards Hall Street. You may also park on the side of our playground on Hall Street or in front of the middle school in the designated parking areas on the road. There are no drop-offs behind Dummer School unless a child is late to school and then they will need to ring the bell to enter the school. Drop-offs and Pick-ups are not allowed in front of Sandwich Middle School. This is a bus lane only. If a child is late to school, they will need to go around to the back of Dummer and ring the bell because we will not know they are out front. We have reminded students of this various times already this year.
Nurse's Notes
Medication - All medications, including cough drops, TUMS (calcium carbonate), Lactaid (lactase enzyme), Tylenol and any other over-the-counter products, require a Medication Authorization Form to be completed and signed by a student’s healthcare provider and their parent/guardian.
Please call 815-786-8498 or email me at lbrummel@sandwich430.org with any questions or if I can be of assistance. I look forward to partnering with you to ensure your student’s health while they are at school.
Cell Phones & Data Watches
All cell phones and data watches need to be turned off and in backpacks when they are in school. They may be turned on when students leave the building at the end of the day.
Come See Us At The Sandwich Fair!
We hope to see everyone back at our booth for all your water, pop, and/or Gatorade needs! We are right by the Grandstands/Track where we have been for years. All money raised, goes right back to our school. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! :)
Too Good for Drugs
The Ben Gordan Center Northwestern Medicine in DeKalb works with various school districts to deliver their Too Good for Drugs Program. Their staff comes into our school to teach a total of 10 lessons during our students’ PE times. These lessons are correlated with the Illinois Learning Standards for Physical Development and Health. Lesson details were sent home with your students last week. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dummer School.

Erin's Law
Erin’s Law:
Senate Bill 6193 (Public Act 96-1524) requires age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education in pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. The District, in consultation with its counselors and social workers, has developed age-appropriate continuum of learning opportunities for students to help increase their safety throughout the community. Parents are encouraged to review the warning signs of possible child abuse, which can include:
Unexplained injuries and changes in behavior
Returning to earlier behavior (regressing to behaviors more appropriate for younger children)
Fear of going to certain previously welcome locations (neighbors, relatives, friends, etc.)
Changes in eating habits and/or sleeping patterns
Changes in school performance and/or attendance
Risk-taking behavior
Inappropriate sexual behavior
Mood swings
Lack of personal care or hygiene
Safety Matters!
Every year our schools have scheduled dates that we practice our safety drills. Your child will do these throughout the year on the scheduled days, along with various other times, so if the need arises, all students would have gone through the protocols of what to do and know the expectations.
