DISCOVERY LAB
Thanks to two Excellence in STEM Education grants from the Indiana Department of Education totalling approximately $120,000, Southwest School Corporation has launched two state-of-the-art Discovery Labs at Sullivan and Carlisle Middle Schools. These innovative spaces are designed to inspire students to explore, experiment, and engage in hands-on learning across a wide range of subjects.
With over 20 interactive stations in each lab, students delve into areas such as robotics, art, electronics, graphic design, CAD, engineering, virtual reality, animation, virtual dissections, podcasting, and laser creation. Each station offers unique challenges that encourage students to think critically, solve problems, and work collaboratively—skills that are invaluable in both academic and career settings.
These labs are more than just a fun place to learn; they foster essential academic, social, and technical skills that can set students on a path toward success. By engaging with robotics and engineering challenges, students develop mechanical reasoning and computational thinking. Through CAD, graphic design, arts, and animation projects, students enhance their spatial awareness, precision, and creativity. Virtual dissections and other hands-on science activities allow students to engage deeply with scientific principles, fostering curiosity and a solid foundation in biology, anatomy, and other sciences.
The Discovery Labs encourage personal growth, as students build confidence in their abilities to learn new skills, adapt to new technologies, and explore potential career interests through challenges beyond their comfort zones. They are not only gaining knowledge—they’re also building resilience, curiosity, and a passion for learning that will benefit them in high school, college, and beyond.
Specific classes at Sullivan Middle School visit the lab weekly, while teachers at both Carlisle Middle School and Sullivan Middle School are encouraged to schedule time in the lab as part of their curriculum. We’re thrilled to see our students grow academically and personally through these incredible learning opportunities and invite community partners to become a part of these exciting learning spaces.
