South Charlotte Shockwave
January 27th - 31st
One Wintry Week!
With a week that already included a holiday and a workday, then was shortened by snow, this week's edition of the Shockwave is a bit shorter than usual. We will return next week with our Shocker Standouts and action photos from Shocker Nation.
Counselors' Corner
As we end the first semester and start the second semester, it is a great time to sit down with your student and evaluate how they are doing in classes. We often advocate that you treat your child as the CEO of their education, with you as a board member. Take them to get ice cream (or hot chocolate on a cold day) and ask open-ended questions about their grades and classes. Examples: “I see in Powerschool that you did much better on your last science test. How did you study for that one?” “You seem to be struggling a bit with your Honors ELA class; what is your plan to bring that grade up?” “How can I help you to get your work turned in on time more?”
Finally, we suggest you have your student write a SMART goal for at least one class / grade for the next quarter. Helping them come up with a goal, and then progress-monitoring that goal is a great way to get involved with their education without you having to constantly nag them about specific grades. Here is a short YouTube video on SMART goal writing if you would like to watch together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0QfCZjASX8&t=11s
