Photos of the Week...
Dear Families,
We can't wait to see you and your families at the Family Open House on the evening of Tuesday, October 1st (between 5:30-7:30pm). The Floral staff will be present in their classrooms/learning spaces and are eager to welcome you as your child takes you on a tour of their classroom and other learning spaces to give you a sense about their school day and what learning looks like and sounds like in those spaces.
Please review the poster further below so you can plan your family's schedule for that evening. As you will see, each learning space will be open for one hour within the 5:30-7:30 time frame. Depending upon the grades your children attend, please plan ahead so you are sure to visit each learning space in your child's weekly schedule during their Open House hours.
For example, if you have a child in grade 1 and another in grade 3, here is one possible Open House plan for your family based on when teachers and specialists are present:
5:30-5:50 - Visit your child's 1st grade classroom and teacher
6:00-6:45 - Visit your children's art, music, media, and PE classrooms and teachers; visit your children's special education and/or English Language spaces and teachers
6:45-7:10 - Visit your child's 3rd grade classroom and teacher
While classroom teachers won't be giving presentations that evening, they will be sharing printed curriculum guides and information for their grade level.
Teachers are excited to greet families and support students as they take the lead in showing their family where and how they learn at school. Teachers are happy to answer any curriculum-related questions or questions about classroom routines and spaces, however they will not be holding individual conferences with families during this Open House. That opportunity will take place on Conference Day scheduled for November 5th.
Have a wonderful week ahead!
~Lisa and Gina

NEW - The Harvest Hoedown is Back at Floral this Year!
A favorite Floral event is the Harvest Hoedown! This event (on October 31st this year) takes place every other year and engages all Floral students and staff in celebrating the fall season. Held during the school day, classes will join together in the gym and dance to songs (several of which integrate square and line songs/dances that they will learn in music and PE classes.) Specialists are hard at work planning lessons that prepare students for a day of dancing, singing, arts, and fellowship.
On the day of the Hoedown, students and staff are invited to dress in hoedown attire- jeans, denim, checkered/gingham shirts, cowboy boots and hats, bandanas...the ideas are endless!
The specialist team will turn the gym into a true hoedown setting- complete with hay bales, cornstalks, pots of fall flowers, and plenty of pumpkins. We need your help. If your family or friends are able to donate or lend any of these decorative items, please reach out to Amy Smith (PE teacher) or Lindsey Buccella (Music teacher) as soon as possible for planning purposes. Their emails are below. Thanks in advance for your support.

NEW - Toys and Trading Cards at School
We've been noticing an uptick in the amount of trading cards and toys making their way to school. Sometimes students may bring these in as part of sharing at morning meeting which is appropriate. If this is the case, students share and then place the toy or cards in their backpack to take home at the end of the day.
Often toys and cards are brought in to play with and even sometimes 'trade' with each other. This often results in hurt feelings, 'trader's remorse', and can be a significant distraction to teaching and learning. Outside of bringing toys or cards to share at morning meeting or for a special classroom event, we request that these items be kept at home. We appreciate any reminders/reinforcing you can do at home about this expectation. Please reach out to your child's teacher or to the office if you have questions. Thanks for your support.
NEW - Welcome to a New Season of Destination Imagination at Shrewsbury Public Schools!
Destination Imagination is a Challenge Experience program for pre-K, K-12 and university students. Challenges are the prompts or guidelines for what a team creates. Teams develop solutions to project-based STEAM challenges and then present their solutions live at tournaments. All Challenges are open-ended, allowing teams to express themselves creatively and take full ownership of their solutions. Challenges are designed to teach the creative process—a system of learning that is at the root of innovation and a child’s ability to bring an idea to life.
If you are new to DI and want to know more, click on the "Shrewsbury Destination Imagination Learn More" and sign up for a virtual or in person meeting.
Registration for all interested students looking for a team or already in a team, click on this link to register. There is no cost to participate. If you have questions, please contact Rajani Vijayakumar Rvijayakumar@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us
Open House for Families on October 1st
We're planning for a Family Open House on Tuesday, October 1st for all students and families. In place of our typical Curriculum Night, we will host an evening for all students and families to visit school and learn about their child's classroom, teacher, classmates, and learning goals for this year. In addition to classroom visits, our Allied Arts Teachers (music, art, and PE) will also host families in their classrooms/learning spaces. The schedule is:
- Kindergarten,Grade 1, and Grade 2 Classrooms Open from 5:30-6:30pm
- Allied Arts, Special Educators, English Language Classrooms Open from 6:00-7:00pm
- Grades 3 and 4 Classrooms Open from 6:30-7:30pm
It is anticipated that the classroom visit will be approximately 20 minutes or so. That provides enough time for families to visit Allied Arts classrooms or other learning spaces during their open times. This also permits families with multiple children in multiple grades to visit all their children's classrooms in one evening. Please note that this evening is not a time to receive individual progress updates or conferences with teachers (that opportunity takes place on November 5th).
We're hoping this change in format will allow for more families to attend and actively engage in their child's school experience.
Parent Drop-Off Reminders
If you get out of your car in the morning to unbuckle your child/children, please do not park in front of one of the four cones. Instead, stay in the car line, pull ahead of the cones when it's your turn, and park your car to assist your child. This enable the car line to continue running smoothly and efficiently. It also reduces the number of parents and students walking near moving cars.
For our youngest and smallest students, the goal is working towards independence in getting out of the car on their own in the parent drop-off line. Thank you for working with the staff in that effort and ensuring the safety of all students.

Attendance at School
As we start a new school year, we want to remind everyone of the importance of consistent attendance. As you may know, consistent attendance at school is a key factor in students’ overall learning success, including their likelihood of reading proficiently by the end of third grade. Being at school every day matters. The Department of Education monitors student attendance and considers any student who has been absent for 10% of the school year to be chronically absent.
Some absences are necessary, such as student illness, medical conditions or appointments, religious observances, or family emergencies. Absences such as family vacations, sporting events, or taking the day off from school for reasons unrelated to illness, medical appointments, emergencies, or religious observances are considered to be unexcused. Please avoid planning family vacations during the school year.
Please click on the link to review the infographic for more information about the importance of school attendance and some ways that you can maintain a healthy habit of school attendance for your child.

Notes from the Floral Nurses
Welcome Families! Here is a list of helpful information regarding safety & health protocols:
Medical Info: If there is a medical condition that the school should be aware of, please contact the school nurse.
Safety: Please log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal to ensure all phone numbers, email addresses, and Emergency Contacts are up-to-date. Here’s the link to access PowerSchool or set up an account: PowerSchool Parent Portal | Information Technology.
Medicine: Also in your PowerSchool account, please indicate the medicines listed in the Nursing Consent Form you allow us to administer to your child as needed. Students may not carry cough drops, allergy pills, nor any medicine in backpacks as it is not safe for students to self-medicate, and another child may find it, consume it, and there may be adverse effects. For all students’ safety, please do not send any medicine with your child to school.
Illness: Before school, if your child has a temperature over 100.0 degrees, is vomiting, or has diarrhea please keep them home. Rest is vital so they may return strong and able to do their best. They should remain home until symptoms have resolved and they’ve been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine. Here is the district’s Health Information page.
Injuries: Please report any significant injuries, surgeries, or emergency room visits. If your child is wearing a brace, boot, cast, or using a wheelchair, please first send documentation showing they have been cleared to be in school and we will immediately put appropriate supports in place at school.
Food allergies: SPS schools are ‘Allergy Aware’ and students are taught not to share food at lunch nor snack time. As a reminder, the cafeteria serves a wide variety of food including items with the nine major food allergens. Please speak with your child about making safe food choices if getting a school lunch. See this link to the SPS Food Services page. Food may not be sent in for birthday celebrations.
Contagious diseases: Please notify us if your child tested positive for strep, pink eye, or other infectious diseases. Students must take antibiotics for 24 hours before they return to school.
Wet clothes: pack a change of clothing & underwear in your child’s backpack. Clothes get wet in school due to bathroom accidents, liquid spills, or splashing in puddles. Changing into their own clothes provides extra comfort.
Annual check-ups: Please email us your child’s yearly physical exam, or place a hard copy in a sealed envelope labeled ‘School Nurses’ in your child’s backpack.
Resources: Click on the link for more health information: Nursing & Health Services Department.
We look forward to a great year and please reach out with questions or concerns.
