Junior Leadership Corps will have its first Raider practice on August 22, 2023 at Shiloh Middle school starting at 07:40 am, if your child is planning on participating please have them at the school no later than 07:30. Also, most practices will be on Tuesday and Thursday morning and all will start at 07:40 am. Some of you are probably wondering what the Raider team is. The Raider team is comprised of students that participate in events such as:

We are excited to announce that our school district has adopted a new form of school-to-home communication called ParentSquare. This unified communications platform is designed to keep parents and guardians informed and encourage greater engagement and connection with your child’s school and Gwinnett County Public Schools.

ParentSquare provides a safe way for district administrators, school principals, teachers, staff, and parents to receive and send information, such as:

• Weather-related closings & delays
• School and class information
• Share pictures and files
• See calendar items
• Upcoming class activities

District and school information will now be sent to your computer or phone via email and/or text via ParentSquare. For even more convenience, download the ParentSquare app (available for free for iOS and Android devices). Please note that some schools and teachers may still use other district-approved tools for the 2023-2024 school year to communicate with their families.

A parent or guardian must bring any / all medications to the school and fill out a medication administration form. Students are not allowed to carry any medications with them at school or on the bus. This includes any over the counter medication, for example; cough drops, Tylenol, etc. If you would like your child to have any OTC medication left in the clinic, you must bring to school with a completed medical authorization form.

To give us authorization to give your student their medication you will need to complete the Medication Authorization Form. You may print it, complete it, and bring it in or you can pick one up to complete in the clinic. A separate form is required for each individual medication.

If your student requires an inhaler and/or an Epi-pen you will need to complete the appropriate form.

For your student to be permitted to carry their inhaler and/or Epi-pen on their person, their physician will need to complete the section of our form advising us of their authorization. If the student will be carrying their inhaler and/or Epi-pen on their person, we ask that you also provide the clinic with a backup in case one is needed.

All donors will receive a recognition item and a free cholesterol screening. Donors must be 16 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and show photo I.D. 16-year olds require written parental permission.

This week we finished adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions with a quiz on Friday. Next week, we will start Decimal Operations. Please remember to check grades on Monday.

Students have started the unit on Geography of Europe. This week we finished up the Physical and Political Features of Europe. Next week, we will be discussing how the Climate, Location, and Natural Resources of Europe affect where people live and trade.

During Week 4, our 7th Grade Math students will take their first Local Common Assessment (Unit Test) of the school year.

The Unit 1A Assessment will Cover:

• Number lines (integers and rational numbers)

• Additive inverses

• Adding and subtracting positive and negative integers (whole numbers)

• Adding and subtracting positive and negative rational numbers (decimals and fractions both proper (numerator is smaller than the denominator) and improper fractions (numerator is larger than the denominator)

• Converting decimals to fractions and vice versa

• Absolute value (how far a number is from 0)

• Real world scenario word problems that make these topics come to life for our scholars

The assessment will be given on Tuesday, August 22nd 2023 and is 10 questions long. It will be given via Edulastic (online). There are 5 AKS on the assessment and so your 7th Grade Math teachers decided to create/select two questions for each AKS for the assessment. Students should be studying at home in their spare time. Each teacher has shown students where they can look for study material and if nothing else, they can review the work completed in class each day. Khan Academy is also a great FREE resource if you simply look up these topics.

On Monday, we will have a review day in class to prepare for the test and dust off our weekend brain a bit.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we will continue on to new content but still related to our previous standards: we will focus back on integers but instead of adding and subtracting positive and negative integers, we will begin to multiply positive and negative integers and learn the rules that go along with that. As we move deeper into our learning on Thursday, we will begin utilizing real-world scenarios to exemplify how this topic will be used by our scholars as they grow up, in addition to the many future years or school during which they will use it.

Finally, on Friday, we will hold a “reteach/reassess” class in Math for Tuesday’s assessment. Teachers will have had an opportunity to review student data and learn what types of misconceptions students had about the five AKS on the assessment. Teachers will address these misconceptions with the students and then students will have an opportunity to take a second assessment on those original standards. If they score higher than their original score, they will receive the new grade in the grade book.

Students will continue with Unit 2 Physical and Human Geography of Southwest Asia.

Students are covering Cell Structure and learning about the organelles and how they function in the cell. Students should be able to tell the difference between an Animal and Plant cell.

Next week we will continue with Unit 1 by Justifying Steps using Algebraic Properties, Identifying Equations with Special Solutions, and Writing and Solving One Variable Equations. Check StudentVue weekly to see your child’s progress.

Students completed Unit 1: Georgia’s Beginnings this week. Next week, we will be starting on Unit 2: Georgia's Colonizations.

Technology Tips

1. Students should charge their Chromebook every night.

2. Students should bring their charged Chromebook and the charger to school every day.
