Counselor Corner
Welcome back to school!
My name is Patti Tanner. I am the school counselor. This will be my 21st year at RES (16 as the counselor) and my 28th year in education. I love working here with all of my wonderful colleagues, students and families! My husband and I have four adult children and five grandchildren! If I can be of any assistance to you, I can be reached by emailing ptanner@hoover.k12.al.us or by calling the school at 205-439-3400. I meet with every class every week and teach the students about being the best student, friend and person they can be. Parents and teachers may refer students to me for individual sessions, and students are also able to sign up for small groups as needed. I look forward to getting to walk alongside you as your child is learning in elementary school.
Character Counts
Each month as part of our weekly classes, students and I will learn about and practice a different character trait each month. During the month of September our focus will be on Compassion. Students will learn that compassion is caring about someone’s need enough to do something about it. Students will learn about our Annual Poptab Collection for Birmingham’s Ronald McDonald House. Students will be invited to collect poptabs from drink and food cans and bring them to Mrs. Tanner for delivery.
Coffee with the Counselor
Meetings for parents will be offered monthly on a Tuesday morning in my classroom to discuss topics relevant to parenting children. In September, I invite all parents to join us for Pastries with Our Principals! This will be a great time of getting to meet our new admins and some of the other parents at RES. Please join us September 17 from 7:45-8:30 a.m. and bring your suggestions for topics you would be interested in learning more about!

Parent Teacher Organization
Welcome back, RES families!
I am honored to be the PTO president for the 2024-2025 school year. Thanks to your financial support last school year, our PTO board was busy this summer working on projects around RES and making purchases to benefit our students and teachers. We are thankful to have accomplished the following for the start of this school year:
Renovated three workspaces: the large central conference room and teacher workrooms in the 2nd/3rd grade and 4th/5th grade hallways
Created a new teacher workroom for the K/1st grade hallway
Stocked all teacher workrooms with snacks and drinks (you can help keep these spaces full of treats for our hardworking staff by purchasing from this Amazon wishlist)
Purchased balls and other recess equipment for every class
Purchased a custom mascot costume, our very own Jaggy Junior
Updated the school logo and designed new marketing materials
Created the Alice Turney Legacy Fund to ensure there are dedicated funds to support students in need
As a PTO, our mission is to assist and support the school in providing our students with the best educational opportunities available. You can help us reach these goals through financial and volunteer support. All money raised by PTO goes directly back into the school to help pay for things like classroom materials, professional development, visiting authors, teacher appreciation events, and school improvements not covered by state or city funding.
To become a PTO member, simply pay the $35 yearly membership dues on myschoolfees.com (found in your student’s “Optional Fees” list). This does not oblige you to any commitments around the school, though we’d love for anyone who is interested in volunteering to sign up using the link below.
Our biggest fundraiser, Boosterthon, has the theme Let’s GLOW Crazy this year and will kick off with a pep rally for our students on Friday, September 13. The fun-filled week will conclude on Friday, September 20, with a glow themed Silent Disco dance party for each grade. We can’t wait to tell you more about this initiative and the incentives students can earn for themselves, their class, and even their teacher by securing donations using the online giving platform!
We will have a general body PTO meeting at STEAM Night on September 18 and hope to see you there! Be sure to follow us on social media for updates about RES and PTO efforts throughout the year. We appreciate your support and look forward to an incredible school year!
