Week 34
It's been a busy, but positive week at MUMS! We are so grateful to all of our musicians and our choral and band directors for a fantastic show on Tuesday evening! Hearing our middle school students fill the auditorium and halls of MUHS is such a gift! Thank you to caregivers for making it possible for your students to attend. Also in the musical world, MUHS will host a Jazz concert tonight in collaboration with MUMS. We are so lucky to have a community that values the arts and we are look forward to hearing the amazing Jazz that they create.
Tonight we will host our rising 6th grade caregivers for our informational night! This evening is such a great way to begin to meet our new families and paint a picture of what middle school will look like and feel like for their students. Additionally, we look forward to welcoming back current and former families and reconnecting!
Lastly, we are very excited for our 8th grade trip to Boston tomorrow! Words cannot convey our gratitude for all of the work that our 8th grade families have done to make this trip possible! We are excited for a full and long day and look forward to sharing pictures upon our return! If you are the caregiver of an 8th grader please be sure to have your student at MUMS between 5:45 and 5:55.
Enjoy this beautiful weather and have a great weekend!
Best,
Michaela

From The MYP Coordinators
All 8th graders on Teams 3 & 4 in Language and Literature and Individuals and Societies are learning about the art of persuasion and the power of strong, credible evidence to support their argument. In addition, students are sharpening their ability to anticipate the counterclaim-- what the “other side” might say-- and come up with a reasonable rebuttal. Developing our ability to build a well-organized, thoughtful argument is an important life skill, and will certainly benefit our 8th graders in many ways. Ask an 8th grader about the persuasive techniques they’re finding especially useful, and how they are preparing for their upcoming debate in Language and Literature!

Welcome To MUMS
Skylar LaFerriere - Wellness
My name is Skylar LaFerriere. I grew up in Rutland, Vermont, and graduated from Rutland High School. I went on to attend Vermont State University–Castleton, where I earned a degree in Physical Education. With a deep-rooted passion for teaching, mentoring, and coaching youth sports, I have demonstrated commitment through my involvement with Vermont Adaptive—an organization dedicated to making physical activity accessible for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities.
Most recently, I’ve worked as a paraeducator at Rutland Town School, gaining valuable experience supporting students in a school setting.
I am excited to join the Middlebury community and eager to build strong relationships with students and their families. I look forward to guiding students on their personal fitness journeys and becoming a positive and supportive presence within the school.
Outside the classroom, I enjoy staying active through recreational sports like pickleball, tennis, hiking, and softball. My interests also include traveling, strength training, running, and reading. You might spot me around town with my wife and two doodles out for a walk.
Heather Smith, School Counselor
Hello! My name is Heather Smith. I am originally from Texas where I taught art for 14 years prior to moving to Newport, VT to work with students using Restorative Practices within my role as school counselor. I am passionate about social emotional learning, building community, and working with others. I love hiking, cycling, reading, creating art, and live music. I look forward to learning more about this community and working with you all!
There's still time to share a teacher/staff appreciation! Deadline 05.31.25!
Our teachers and staff are amazing! At ACSD, we turn Teacher Appreciation Week into Teacher & Staff Appreciation Month. You can help! Share an appreciation HERE.
Parents ~ Ask your child if a teacher or grown-up has done something to make their school day better. Open the form and fill it out together or share something you have appreciated!
Students ~ ALL appreciations matter...but hearing your words is especially meaningful!
The form will be open all month. You can also nominate our ACSD Teacher & Staff of the Year awards (presented at our August 2025 staff Welcome Back week)!

- If you send a student to school with an early dismissal note or bus note they should bring them the office before TA.
- All students taking a bus to another place other than home need a bus note from their caregiver. This note needs to be stamped/signed by one of our Administrative Assistant's in the front office. Students will not be allowed to ride a bus to another location without a note from home that is stamped/signed by the office.
