Halloween at GCIT
This week students and staff participated in various Halloween activities where their creativity and generosity were on full display. Whether it was participating in our annual Trunk or Treat, donating non-perishable foods for our food drive - "So Kids Can Eat", creating artistic hair designs with manikins in Cosmetology class, participating in the door decorating contest, joining with friends and colleagues to display various themed costumes, or going solo in their costume designs - students and staff had a very exciting week leading up to Halloween.
We would like to thank all staff, students, parents, and community members for participating in the many activities of this week and for showing their school spirit! Thank you!

Computer Science Freshman Class Virtual Field Trip
The goal of the field trip was to learn about conservation. Student viewed the work of three industry professionals and were challenged to apply what they learned. There were two challenges for saving an endangered species:
Challenge #1: Think like a scientist and build new knowledge.
1. What endangered species does your group want to study?
2. What part of the world does the animal live? Describe its habitat.
3. What is causing them to be endangered?
4. List 1β2 reasons why this species should be saved.
5. Create a sketch graph of how the population of your species has changed over time.
Challenge #2: Think like an engineer and design a solution to a problem.
6. As a group, brainstorm ideas of smart devices that could be used to help monitor and save this
species. All ideas should be written down!
Below are pictures of their work.

Dia de los Muertos
Students in Mrs. Eppolite's Honors Spanish III class worked together in groups to research the different aspects of an Ofrenda for the Mexican Holiday of Dia de los Muertos. Each group researched their aspect, created and designed something representing their aspect and then presented it to the class and added it to our class Ofrenda.
The different aspects of the Ofrenda are Flowers, Candles, Pictures, Skulls and Papel Picado. Another important part of this holiday is Pan de Muerto (Dead Bread). Our bakery was nice enough to make our classes delicious Pan de Muerto for our classes and for them to try an important food in this Mexican Celebration!

Drama Senior Class Production
This week the Drama Senior class performed their senior show - "Museum". It was an excellent performance and our talented young actors performed with a great professionalism! Their high level of performance was recognized by experts in the field, who attended the show. Unbeknown to our young actors, members from the New York Film Academy attended one of the shows and based on the performance awarded 4 seniors scholarships - a total of $70,000. The students were awarded these scholarships during the closing night of the show.
Congratulations to Ms. Katie Knoblock and her entire team for directing the students and producing such a phenomenal show!
News From School Based Youth Services (SBYS)
In the month of October, School Based continued to recognize Suicide Awareness. The staff and students were given random buttons and bracelets to support Suicide Awareness. The semi-colon (;) on the pins represents that your story isn't over. "The semicolon has become a symbol for those who have battled depression, anxiety, addiction, and other mental health issues; it is a reminder that even though their story could have ended there, they chose to continue on". Always know that someone is here for you. Never suffer in silence.

During the month of October School Based also hosted week of respect and Red Ribbon Week. The students were asked to sign a pledge to be Drug and Alcohol free. The students did a great job, and their names are displayed on a bulletin board outside the School Based office. This is just a small start to our display. The Red Shirts and other students did a great job getting students to sign up and spread a positive word.
Hello All from School Based Youth Services (SBYS). Just a beautiful photo from bus duty in the morning on a wonderful November morning.
This November SBYS will be going to Cathedral Kitchen on November 20. Permission slips are located in the School Based offices and the following day we will be hosting our annual Advisory Dinner, November 21. It is a limited availability event, but we would love to have you.
This month we will have a few guests to discuss Mental Health and the resources available within our community. Please email Dr. Jacob at jjacob@gcecnj.org so I can confirm your attendance. Dinner will also be served so we welcome you and your student, BUT you must get a confirmation on attending as space is limited.

And last but not least, School Based and the entire GCIT family would like to welcome back Ms. Glazer. Ms. Glazer has served as the former Director of School Based Youth Services and will be with us to assist students in the SBYS offices. She will be here on a limited based, but we are certainly glad she could assist us, and we welcome her back with open arms. Students are welcome to make appointments to see her when she is here. Her office will be located in the School Based suites next to Mrs. Hasko and Mr. Ruiz. Welcome Back Ms. Glazer!
Thank you for the continued support of School Based Youth Services. If you need anything, please reach out to Mr. Ruiz, Mrs. Hasko, Ms. Glazer or myself. Have a great day.
And just a reminder that GCIT will be hosting the SAT's on December 7th. Please sign up through www.collegeboard.org That is not sponsored by SBYS, but we help with it.
