Instructional Coaching in Mathematics will combine the use of effective instructional strategies to teach mathematics and tools for instructional coaches to support teachers in utilizing said strategies. Participants will be introduced to the concepts and strategies within instructional coach Jim Knight’s book, “The Impact Cycle”, as well as the National Center on Intensive Intervention’s “Principles for Designing Intervention in Mathematics” This four-day series will focus on an overview of the three key components of the Impact Cycle including: Identify, Learn and Improve. In addition, the training series will include effective mathematics instruction such as concrete-representational-abstract approach, teaching vocabulary, effective questioning, explicit and systematic instruction, fluency building, and error analysis. Participants will explore the utilization of audio or video recording of instruction for self-reflection and coaching purposes. Additionally, they will learn about and engage with the Needs Assessment and Self-Assessment from The Impact Cycle in preparation for work with mathematics teachers. Goal setting and action planning based upon the learning and the coaching tools within The Impact Cycle will be explored and facilitated over the course of the training.
