KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
I hope this Friday message finds everyone looking forward to a week of fun family time for spring break. We prepared the students for a wonderful week as they all got to enjoy the love of science with an invigorating and exciting visit from Michael Green, The Science Machine, on Thursday. Today we engaged in all things STEM which afforded even more hands-on learning opportunities for the students and staff. Thank you to Ms. Evangelista, Curriculum Support Teacher, for putting together these events – our Explorers’ minds were challenged while having so much fun!
We want to wish our awesome assistant principal, Mrs. Michelle Levine, a very happy Assistant Principal’s Week! We are thankful for her dedication and for all she pours into our students, staff, and families. The official AP celebration week is the week of spring break, so she will get to enjoy some time to rest and recharge for sure.
Please don’t forget to review the solar eclipse information that was sent to all Northwood families via a separate messenger on Wednesday, the 27th.
Enjoy the week. Find time to read and enjoy friends and family. It’s an exciting time to be a college basketball and/or MLB fan as one season is winding down with tournaments and the other is starting off with opening weekend games. We can’t wait to see everyone back safely after break.
With much joy and gratitude,
Heather Rucker
FIRST GRADE EXPLORERS
First grade has been having so much fun these past few weeks! We loved cheering on our friends who earned the Gold T-shirt, earning our Boosterthon prizes, seeing The Science Machine, and so much more! We have been busy learning different addition and subtraction strategies as well as discussing needs and wants in economics. We are looking forward to our upcoming field trip to Warbington Farms to pick strawberries after break.
FOURTH GRADE EXPLORERS
Students had a great time watching The Science Machine do his thing! Through the funniest and most engaging presentation, students learned new science vocabulary and cool, different experiments!
2024 BOOSTERTHON GLOW PARTY RUN WRAP UP
Thank you for your support in making this year's Boosterthon Glow Party Run a huge success! Your Explorers adapted wonderfully to moving indoors and had a blast running around our transformed glow in the dark gym. This year Explorers raised more than $49,000, and there's still time to raise more! Donating is open until Friday, April 5th. We are always excited when registrations and donations remain at a high level; and appreciate that so many students are engaged and involved.
A special thank you to all our volunteers and to our Northwood Foundation Members - Torrey Linder, Faisal Siddiqui, Loren Akin, Sue Ellen Brown, Jeremy Thomas, Megan Larkins, Nicole Elstad and Principal Rucker. We appreciate all of your hard work!
Here is the link to a fun recap video for you to enjoy! You just might spot your Explorer!
NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The theme this year is “Building a Hopeful Future, Together.” Strong support systems help families thrive! Support can come from family, friends, neighbors, and others in the community. Together we can strengthen families and prevent child abuse and together we can make it easier for families to access support services and learn how to identify and build on family strengths. By providing all families with equal opportunity and access to the support they need, we can help improve the safety and well-being of children and youth across the country. To learn more, please access www.childwelfare.gov/preventionmonth #BuildingTogether #CAPMonth2024 #HopefulFutures
FIELD DAY T-SHIRTS
Northwood is excited to offer families the opportunity to purchase field day shirts this year. Kindergarten through fourth grade shirts will be red, white, and blue tie dye and fifth grade will be neon tie dye (samples on the flyer). Purchase of the shirts is completely optional, but orders will only be placed for those that prepay. Please scan the QR code or follow the link attached to fill out the form and prepay.
We will not have any extras to sell and all orders need to be in by April 12th. Please reach out to Mrs. Gardella should you have any questions at gardellaj@fultonschools.org
GET READY FOR GEORGIA MILESTONES
What can I do to help my child prepare?
Be certain your child gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast.
Be certain your student is at school on time, so they are not worried about being late.
Remind students that cell phones and smart watches will be collected and stored in the secure testing room during test administration times. It’s best for students to leave them at home if possible.
Please have students bring their fully charged device every day.
Get information and practice using this link: Georgia Milestones Resources (gadoe.org)
Experience the online testing session. See below for more details, and use this link: www.gaexperienceonline.com
What happens if my child is absent?
- There will be rolling make-ups throughout the testing window. Please do not send your child in if they are sick.
Can visitors be in the building?
- During GMAS testing, we will not be allowing visitors in the building before 11:30 am; and there will also be no lunch visitors these days.
Georgia Experience Online
Georgia Experience Online is a practice site that can be used for students to learn more about the structure and content of the Georgia Milestones Assessment, experience online testing, and practice using online testing tools. Parents are welcome to explore this site and use to practice with your child.
Please note that the EOG Test Practice site will have ELA and Math questions while the EOG Study Guide for Students and Parents only focuses on Math and Science (5th grade only).
Below you will find an attachment with directions and the link to access the site. Please contact your child’s teacher or our CST, Danielle Evangelista if you have any questions.
IS YOUR CHILD LEAVING NORTHWOOD ELEMENTARY

There is no need to re-register returning students.
STUDENT SUCCESS SKILLS STUDENT INVENTORY
The Student Success Skills Inventory is used to measure student growth across Student Success Skill standards as a result of ReThink Ed lessons. Students complete the inventory by indicating if they almost always, always, sometimes, or never apply the skills being taught in the areas of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Competence, Collaborative Problem Solving, Reflective Learning Strategies, and Sense of Belonging. The SSS Inventory is about 15-20 items and is administered to students in the Fall and Spring. It takes about 15 minutes to complete. Students complete the SSS Inventory using the Illuminate platform.
- Spring Inventory Administration: April 8, 2024 – April 12, 2024
If you have any questions about the SSS Inventory, please contact your school’s Student Success Skills Champion. Parents can choose to opt their student out of the inventory. To opt out, parents must submit a written request to the school principal.
