Year 5 Mini Break!
Exploring Lindisfarne
Last week Year 5 went on their residential to Lindisfarne. They had an absolutely fabulous time in the sunshine discovering what life is like on an island. On the first day they visited the Heritage Centre and Lindisfarne Priory where they wrote some fabulous poetry which they shared at our impromptu poetry recital. After lunch on the beach they explored the village and visited St Cuthbert's beach where they completed a scavenger hunt. At night they went on a walk with their torches and were very lucky to have such a clear night to see lots of constellations of stars.
On the second day the children visited the castle, lime kilns, went rock pooling and had a competition to build the biggest pebble tower. In the afternoon, after they had an ice cream, they visited another beach and created beach art, jumped down sand dunes and some even braved the North Sea for a paddle.
On the final day before returning home to Ripon the children enjoyed an exciting boat ride around the Farne Islands where they saw lots of seals and a variety of birds. They had a delicious lunch of fish and chips before stopping off at Alnwick Castle where they enjoyed a workshop, taking the roles of English and Scottish soldiers launching a battle on the Barbican. The children were an absolute pleasure to take and represented our school brilliantly. Thank you so much to all the staff who accompanied the children on the visit.
Here is what some of the children said about the visit:
Georgia 'I liked the rock pooling because we got to see lots of sea life. I caught 3 crabs and some else caught a fish.'
Vinnie 'I loved the sea art because me and my friends made a castle.'
Arlo 'I really liked Alnwick Castle because it was really fun and we learnt lots of interesting facts.'
Blake 'I really liked the boat ride because I have never been on a boat before and the seals were really cute.'
Max 'I liked the night walk because it was really good to see so many stars really clearly.'
Madison 'I loved Lindisfarne because it was a once in a lifetime opportunity with memories which I will have forever!'
Poetry Week
This week has been Poetry Week! We have been celebrating poetry throughout the school by reading, reciting and writing poems, from nursery rhymes and songs in Nursery, to limericks about volcanoes in Year 4, to creating an epic performance of ‘The Highwayman’ in Year 5! The week culminated in a whole school Poetry Recital Assembly this morning, at which every class performed a group poem and three children from each class recited poems individually. It has been wonderful to see children enjoying poetry and the assembly was a real treat. Well done to all who took part.
Netball Tournament
A group of girls from Year 6 took part in a Sporting Influence Netball Tournament at Outwood Academy on Wednesday. They played superbly, despite some extremely heavy rain, winning their first two matches 9-0 and 11-0! Unfortunately, after a defeat in the third match, they did not make it through to the final, but won their third-place play-off match and finished a brilliant third overall. Well done to all of the girls, who represented school excellently at the tournament.
Year 3 Class Worship
On Wednesday, it was Year 3's turn for class worship. They focused on our value of perseverance and told the story of The Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires. The story was an example of how sometimes you must keep going, even when you get frustrated and feel like giving up. The children read beautifully and they asked the audience some questions to reflect on their own experiences, even putting some teachers on the spot!
