SOTA @ CGHS
Newsletter - Jan. 31, 2025
Dear SOTA @ CGHS Families,
Don't forget that next Friday is now an in-person day!
We're excited to announce that the Class of 2025 Salutatorian is our own Emmie Phillips! Congrats, Emmie!
Families - we are starting the process of course registration for the 25/26 school year. This process will take the next few months. Teachers have begun by moving students to the next course in their subject area. Next, students will get the opportunity to make changes to their courses. Students will have another chance to make changes before the process is complete. Here are a few things to consider when thinking about your courses for next year:
- Current 9th graders will need to select a World History course. Ms. Rose sent info about this course earlier this week. Families will receive an emailed form next week where students can make their selection.
- Honors science courses include participation in the Science Fair.
- AP courses are college-level courses. They include an optional exam taken at the end of the year that may or may not lead to college credit (depending on the student's test score and the college's requirements.)
- If you have any questions about a particular class, talk to your teachers or see Ms. Rose or Ms. Brown.
Schedule change! Please note that the Feb. 27 PreLGPE chorus concert has been moved to Feb. 25. This event is at the Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church.
Have a great weekend!

From our friends at Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory...
We recognize and value the importance of access and hands-on experiences. We also recognize that not every scholar has the resources necessary to allow them the ability to visit their dream school. Our admissions team is committed to, and passionate about, creating access and opportunity to scholars from historically underrepresented/underserved communities, that support their educational and professional growth. We want to provide students with the tools they need to pursue an education at Berklee and a career in music and the performing arts. We are proud to be in our fourth year of this amazing program and, we hope you will help us spread the word.
The Berklee fly-in program will provide scholars the opportunity to experience Berklee from the student perspective. Attendees will spend 3 full days on our campus learning from faculty, staff, and students. The best part?! This program is COST FREE to admitted participants!! Berklee will cover the ENTIRE cost of attendance (travel and meals included)!
Interested scholars must fill out the application (linked below), and submit materials, by March 1st, 2025. Scholars selected to participate will be made aware by April 8th. Once the selection process is complete, we will reach back out to invitees to confirm their attendance and collect additional details. We will have around-the-clock mentors and chaperones. We will also arrange their travel, excluding pick up/drop off from their home mode of transportation (bus/train/air). Space is limited and our program does have a maximum capacity of 40 scholars.
When: June 22-26, 2025 (arrive on June 22nd, programming June 23-25, depart on June 26th)
Where: Berklee Boston (921 Boylston St, Boston, MA. 02115)
Application submission deadline: March 1st
Decisions will be released on: April 8th
Nominated students should:
Be between the ages of 14-16 (no exception)
Be a US Citizen, DACA recipient, Permanent Resident, or a non-citizen US national
Have a current GPA of 2.5 or above
Have a passion for the music industry and/or the performing arts
Submit application and supplemental materials
Commit to at least 3 zoom sessions alongside a guardian/parent prior to the program and, quarterly check-ins post-program
Our program will:
Lay the groundwork for preparing underrepresented youth for an educational career at Berklee
Create a solid foundation for connection through peer to peer and staff/faculty interaction
Educate scholars on the vast career paths and opportunities available to them with a Berklee degree
Opportunities for hands-on mentorship and sponsorship
Provide workshops, sessions, and events designed prepare attendees for a music/performing arts based institution
Provide a unique and customized audition/interview experience
Build community, connection, and belonging
Hold quarterly check-ins, post-program
Provide pathways to Berklee Summer Programs
Provide application fee waivers for each attendee
*This program promotes pre-barrier access to our institution and will help connect students to The Office of Admissions, Berklee Summer Programs, the Black Scholars Initiative (BSI), the SOMUS LatinX initiative, Africana Studies, and much more. Students will stay on our campus, from June 22nd - June 26th.

Community Service Opportunities
The nonprofit organization, The Hrlmgirl Project, is an official 501(c)(3) dedicated to empowering young women through mentorship, education, and community engagement. We would love to offer an opportunity for seniors pursuing the Fine Arts Seal at the School of the Arts who are interested in photography and videography to gain valuable experience while fulfilling their community service requirements.
We are currently looking for interns or students to capture photos and videos at our upcoming events. Their work would be featured on our social media platforms, newsletters, and website, with full credit given to the students. Additionally, we are happy to submit any necessary documentation to verify and support their community service contributions.
Our upcoming events include:
- Community Gala on February 2nd
- Prom Dress Giveaway on March 2nd (some SOTA students are already helping with planning for service hours)
- 8th Grade Transition Event in April, where SOTA students are engaging with middle schoolers about the transition to high school
Students can contact us via email at info@hrlmgirlproject.org or reach out through Instagram DM at @thehrlmgirlproject
