Principals go to Great Lengths to Support Students
ABC Students Demonstrate Optimism at Contest
The Cerritos Optimist Club held its 54th Annual Oratorical Contest on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the ABC Adult School Cabrillo Lane Campus in Cerritos. ABC Unified School District middle and high school students shared speeches about how to change the world with optimism, which is this year’s theme. In addition to the oratorical competition, the Optimists held a photography contest, challenging students to show portions of the Optimist Creed in pictures. Congratulations to all who participated, and here are the winners:

Artesia High School Jazz Showcase
Artesia High School will host the 4th Annual Jazz Showcase on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. This event features the ABCUSD Jazz Band, along with bands from Carmenita, Haskell, Ross, and Tetzlaff Middle Schools and those from Artesia, Cerritos, Gahr, and Whitney High Schools.
Earth Day Contest
The Soroptimist Club Artesia-Cerritos and Citizens Climate Lobby are holding an Art and Writing Contest for elementary school students in honor of Earth Day. Winners will be awarded on Saturday, April 20th, on stage at Supervisor Janice Hahn’s Earth Day Event.
Hispanic Latino Family Circle
All are welcome to attend the Hispanic Latino Family Circle general meeting and reception on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. The purpose of the Hispanic Latino Family Circle is to share the needs of Hispanic-Latino families and students, and it is held in conjunction with the District’s Equity Office. Gonsalves Students Have a Cow
Thanks to the Dairy Council, students at Gonsalves Elementary School learned about where the dairy products we buy come from. The Dairy Council brought Bailey, a 1,900-pound cow from Ontario, for a Mobile Dairy Assembly. Students learned about a cow’s life cycle, anatomy, agriculture, and milk processing.
Carver Academy Has Visitors
On the heels of earning a National Blue Ribbon Award, Carver Academy has been popular, hosting other schools and school district representatives from across the state. Recently, the Mountain View Whisman School District sent a team of ten, including school board members, to the school to learn more about how Carver implements its Enrichment Clusters and other programs. Schools from the Sacramento area also visited, wanting to see the Swun Math program in action. Congratulations, Carver Academy, for serving as a model school!
Artesia Recognizes Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
The City of Artesia asked our Special Education Local Plan Areas Program (SELPA) to join the City Council at a meeting to recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Each March, we celebrate how people with and without disabilities come together to form strong communities, raising awareness of the importance of inclusion and the contributions of those with developmental disabilities.
Congresswoman Steel Holds Student Art Competition
It’s time for the Congressional Art Competition! Congresswoman Steel invites middle and high school students to submit original artwork to be considered in this year’s competition. The winning artwork will be displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. All submissions must be turned in by April 12, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. Click here for more information about this year’s Congressional Art Competition.

In 1965 the Artesia, Bloomfield, and Carmenita School Districts unified and became the ABC Unified School District. Today, the District serves over 20,000 Pre-K to 12th Grade and adult education students through its 30 campuses, adult school, and virtual academy. The District is home to some of the most awarded and recognized schools in California and serves the cities of Artesia, most of Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, as well as portions of Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk.
