Ebenezer Elementary School
December 2024
Message from the Principal
Dear Ebenezer Families,
Thank you to the many families who attended a parent-teacher conference. Ongoing and meaningful communication between home and school is a key ingredient to student success. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, learning facilitator, transportation coordinator, principal, or other staff member if you have a question or concern you would like to discuss. Also, consider finding a way to become involved with our PTE. There are numerous opportunities to help from home or at Ebenezer. Our next meeting is January 8th at 6:30pm.
The annual PTE Holiday Shop will take place during school on December 4th – 6th. Please have your child bring their money envelope to school by Tuesday, December 3rd. The donations given for the Feed our Flock project showed firsthand the generosity and compassion of Ebenezer students and families.
As the weather becomes cooler, please remember to have your child wear a coat to school. Students without proper attire will not be let outside for recess. If a family is in need of a coat or other items this winter, please contact myself, Mrs. O’Donnell (modonnell@clsd.k12.pa.us) , or Miss Miller (tmiller@clsd.k12.pa.us). Weather emergencies such as school delays, early dismissals, and the closing of school are possibilities this time of year. Please review your emergency plan for childcare if we have a winter storm as it is important to make sure the school, teacher, and child are aware of any changes to their normal routine.
It is important that parents/guardians keep their information updated in Skyward such as email address, home (landline) phone number, cell phone number, and other contact information. This information is used when phone calls are made home from the office or nurse and when Skyward messages are sent home. If there are any changes to your child’s participation in the YMCA SACC program, please notify the school office and your child’s teacher. Thank you for your help with these important items.
May you enjoy the many blessings of the holiday season! Thank you for your continued support
Gregory R. Fulkerson
Principal

What does the GREAT reading instruction looks like in your
child’s EBENEZER classroom?
The “5 pillars” of effective reading instruction: a crash course what It Is why It's Important for reading
Phonemic Awareness
… is a type of knowledge.
A child with phonemic awareness understands that our spoken language is composed of individual sounds. There are roughly 44 spoken sounds in English.
The insight that there are sounds within spoken words helps readers to learn and use letters to represent those sounds.
Phonics
… is a type of instruction.
A student who receives instruction in phonics is taught the relationship between the individual sounds in our spoken language and the letters we use to represent them in our written language.
Learning how the 26 letters in our written alphabet are used to represent the roughly 44 sounds in our spoken language allows students to unlock the code of our written language.
Fluency
… is a characteristic of skilled reading.
A student who has achieved fluency can read text accurately, with expression, at a rate that supports comprehension.
A reader who can turn printed words on the page into language that sounds like speaking has translated the written code back into spoken language. This makes reading comprehension possible.
Vocabulary
… is a component of language.
A child’s vocabulary is made up of the words the child understands.
It is easier for a reader to use what they’ve learned about phonics to translate a written word into a spoken word if they’ve heard the word before — especially if they already know what the word means.
Comprehension
… is the goal of reading.
Comprehension is the cognitive process readers use to understand what they read.
Understanding a text allows the information and knowledge in the text to be remembered, analyzed, discussed, and integrated into a reader’s understanding of the world.

Messages from Teachers
Mrs. Schomp - Library Media Specialist
A big thank you to all who stopped by this year’s District Wide Book Fair at CCMS. All proceeds will benefit CLSD Libraries. Happy Reading!
Mrs. Bickel - 5th Grade Teacher
In a grade-wide initiative, the fifth-grade students collected spare change for one week to honor Kindness Day. The friendly competition aimed to see which class could gather the most change. The winning class would be given the opportunity to choose a charitable organization for the donation.
With support from their families, the fifth graders raised an impressive total of $293.65, all in coins! (It certainly was heavy!) Mrs. Bickel’s class emerged victorious in the challenge and has decided to round their donation up to $300 for The American Cancer Society. This grade-wide kind contribution will be made in honor of Miss Julie Baumbach.
