UNC VOLUNTEEN PROGRAM IS UP AND RUNNING 2022-2023
UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURG - UPMC HILLMAN CANCER CENTER ACADEMY
Happy New Year. After another challenging year, we hope that this message finds you well. We appreciate your help identifying and promoting students for the Hillman Academy and we thank you for being a reference to one of our applicants over the past few years. Last summer we pivoted from the fully virtual program of 2020 to a hybrid program. We were fortunate to work with over 60 enthusiastic students, with approximately half of them in-person and half remote. We learned a great deal from this experience and are committed to hosting another program this coming summer regardless of whether it is in-person or hybrid—although we hope to resume as much full time in-person work as possible. As such we would like to inform you that the application for 2022 is now open and we are looking to spread the word to students and educators alike.
The Hillman Academy provides authentic and mentored research and academic development experiences to a diverse group of high school students. The program is full-time over a 7-8-week span in the summer with options for certain students in our YES subprogram to continue working asynchronously through the school year. Students are placed in individual faculty member’s labs to work on a project with them or someone in their lab (grad student/postdoc). We accept ~60-70 students a summer. The program is free to all local students, and we provide compensation of $2400 to a minimum of 40 students from underrepresented groups to incentivize their participation. We encourage applications from all interested students, especially those from diverse backgrounds, over the age of 15 who are interested in STEM, biomedicine, and/or research. Further, we are happy to make virtual or in-person visits to schools to talk about this opportunity or cancer research in general.
