WES Academics
Improvement in literacy and math skills will be the focus of our School Strategic Plan this year. Weirton Elementary School has developed action plans in these areas through the continuation of effective implementation of the Wit & Wisdom curriculum (reading, comprehension, vocabulary, writing), Fundations (phonics, handwriting), Heggerty (phonemic awareness), and Go Math curriculum.
As a part of our action plans, teachers will spend time during October PLC meetings to analyze beginning of the year benchmarks in STAR reading/math and West Virginia General Assessment data from last school year.
Our staff will also be developing plans to improve school-wide attendance and behavior/social emotional learning.
WES uses Conscious Discipline Curriculum in PreK/K and Well-Being by Studies Weekly in grades K-4 for social emotional learning.
Science and Social Studies curriculum by Studies Weekly.
Thank you to all of you for your support in helping your child(ren) become strong readers, writers, critical thinkers, and problem solvers!

Notes from Nurse DeCaria
With the beautiful onset of the Fall season also comes the unwelcomeness of the cold and flu viruses as well as seasonal allergies. Be sure your child is practicing healthy habits like getting plenty of rest, eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, and good handwashing/sanitizing techniques.
Please make sure your contact number is up-to-date on the emergency card. You will also need to list an emergency. If your child gets sick at school we will need to be able to get a hold of you and arrange for your child to be picked up.
