Mrs. Tolbert Celebrates Black History Month at Cahaba

Last week, Cahaba hosted Mrs. Sherrye Tolbert as a special guest to celebrate Black History Month. Cahaba Kindergarten teacher, Angela Shorter, introduced her to our students by sharing that Mrs. Tolbert is the wife of Bernardo Tolbert and the mom of Tyler Tolbert who plays for the Kansas City Royals, a Major League Baseball team; and Taylor Tolbert, the director of on-campus recruiting for the University of Memphis football program. Both of Mrs. Tolbert's children graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School. Go Huskies!

Mrs. Tolbert is the first black female to sit on the Trussville City Board of Education. She shared a book about First Lady Michelle Obama and interacted with our Kindergarten children. We appreciate Mrs. Shorter setting up this amazing opportunity.

Cahaba First Grade Surgeons Perform Contraction Surgery

First-grade students became surgeons for the day in a fun Contraction Surgery activity! Dressed in masks and gloves, they "operated" by cutting apart two words, like do not, and using bandages to stitch them into contractions like don’t.

With scissors as scalpels and bandages as stitches, students excitedly transformed words like can not → can’t and will not → won’t. This hands-on lesson made learning contractions fun and unforgettable!
