Dear Enumclaw School District Families and Community,
The Masked Reader
Last night, Sunrise Elementary School hosted a Family Reading Night that transformed the ordinary into the extraordinary, drawing in the school’s families and even surprising me with their innovative approach. The “hook” for the evening’s event was a "Masked Reader" concept, where staff and special guests, which included me, donned creative masks and identity-concealing costumes, turning us into mysterious figures ready to share our favorite books.
The gym set the stage for this “unique” literary experience. Each masked reader shared one of their favorite books or poems. The element of wearing a mask added mystery and an exciting twist as families tried to figure out the identity of each person behind the mask, creating an engaging guessing game.
Attendees embraced the challenge, submitting their predictions for each masked reader at the end of the reading. Student and parent laughter, along with excitement, filled the air as the audience actively participated in the guessing game. Moreover, the students’ chants to “take it (the mask) off” brought smiles and chuckles to the readers as we revealed ourselves in the end.
It was a privilege to participate in this event, and my hope is that those in attendance left with a greater appreciation of the district's commitment to fostering a love of reading within the community.
Family Reading Night is yet another example of doing whatever it takes to instill the joy of reading in our students. The masked reader concept not only engaged our students and families but also highlighted the school's dedication to creativity and innovation in education. By blending an element of mystery and excitement into this event, Sunrise Elementary School highlighted the extraordinary efforts our schools undertake to capture the hearts and minds of their students, nurturing a lifelong love of reading in the process.
Sincerely,
Shaun
