A Note from Principal May - 8th Grade End of the Year Activities
As we enter the final month of school, we look forward to some celebratory activities, which will be a great way of sending our 8th graders off to the next level of their education.
The first event will be the 8th Grade Dance, which is the final social event for middle school graduates. The dance will be at Station Campus from 7-9 PM, and the theme is Tropical.
On May 20th, our PTO will be sponsoring the 8th Grade Picnic, an event that has become a tradition and a right of passage for our graduating students. Students will be outside for treats and fun activities, to celebrate the many accomplishments and friendships that have been developed during their middle school years.
The following day, May 21, will be our Promotion Ceremony, held in the BHS Gymnasium starting at 7 PM. The event is open to the public, and tickets are not required. Students are asked to dress appropriately, as there are no gowns.
A Note from Mrs. Buchanan - MAP Testing
Assessments at Station:
It is time for the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) to be administered. All students in second through eighth grade will be assessed between April 23rd to May 10th. The MAP assessment gives us information about each student's instructional level in reading and math and also measures academic growth throughout the year. According to the developer of the MAP test, NWEA, this assessment, although not timed was designed to be completed in less than an hour and adapts to the level of performance of your child. Your child's teacher will be sharing the specific dates that the class will be taking each test. The test results will be shared with you in the form of a Student Progress Report prior to the end of the school year.
Students at BMS-Station school will be taking the MAP assessments on
April 30th and May 1st during periods 1-3.
As a reminder, here are actions parents can take to ensure a positive testing situation for their child:
Make sure your child attends school on testing day, unless s/he is ill.
Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep the night before testing.
Make sure your child eats a good breakfast on mornings of testing.
Make an effort to help your child feel relaxed and unrushed by allowing plenty of time
for daily routines.
Give your child words of encouragement to let him/her know you have confidence in
his/her ability to do his/her best.
Students will be using their iPads for this test. Please make sure they are fully charged and ready to go.
Although this test is not timed, it is designed to be completed in about 45 minutes, most students are done in about an hour. Students will have no more than 2 hours to complete this test.
These assessments give us critical information that can help us help your child. Please make every effort to have your child be in attendance on testing days unless they are ill.

Counselor Connection
Spring is in the air! It’s that time of year when many students struggle more to stay focused on academics and make good decisions. Developmentally, adolescents are more prone to act on impulse and less likely to pause and consider the consequences of their actions. That is why kids at this age need consistent, powerful messages that help them to make choices that are both positive and productive.
Here are a few topics you might consider discussing with your middle schooler:
Digital citizenship
Making positive and healthy choices
Managing stress
Ways to spread kindness
How to be a good friend
The school consistently encourages students to reach out to a trusted adult should they have an issue of their own or if they are concerned about a peer. The trusted adult may be a parent, grandparent, counselor, teacher, coach, etc. Please remember... it’s 60 one minute conversations, not ONE 60 minute conversation!
Visitor Procedures
Sign Out Procedures
If you plan to pick up your child up early from school, we ask that you please put in an Absence Request in the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus. When you arrive to pick up your child, please come to the front door with your cell phone. Ms. Jarva or Ms. Alters will buzz you in and you will scan a QR code (located on table near front door) that is linked to a sign-out form that you complete while you wait for your child to come down from class. Please note, only individuals listed on Infinite Campus (IC) will be allowed to pick up your child. If you need assistance with the parent portal, please contact the Infinite Campus Hotline at (847)-842 3580.
Thank you!

The Innovator's Mindset - Community Event!
JUNE 13, 2024 FROM 12PM-3PM
WILLOW CREEK COMMUNITY CHURCH ACTIVITY CENTER
Kids walk into schools full of wonder and questions. How educators and families respond to students' natural curiosities can help further their exploration and shape the way they learn today and in the future. Our job is to provide new and exciting opportunities for our students. We must foster innovation, encourage critical thinking, and inspire creativity--and those are the skills our students need to succeed. In The Innovator's Mindset, author George Couros encourages parents, teachers and administrators to empower their learners to wonder, to explore--and to become forward-thinking leaders. If we want innovative students, we need innovative educators. In other words, innovation begins with you. Ultimately, innovation is not about a skill set: it's about a mindset.
The Innovator's Mindset event is open to all Barrington 220 staff, as well as members of the community. We hope to have many parents and students join us! This will be held on June 13, 2024 from 12:00-3:00 at the Willow Creek Community Church Activity Center. A copy of George Couros' book, The Innovator's Mindset, will be provided to every participant at the event.
If you have questions, please contact Jordan Anderson, Director of Learning Services at janderson@barrington220.org. While there is no cost to attend, registration is required. Click here to register!
