2018-19 SCHOOL YEAR
Coeur d'Alene Public Schools — March 13, 2019
M&O levy is approved
On Tuesday, our 2-year Maintenance & Operations levy was approved, with nearly 70 percent of voters supporting the request. A big thank you to everyone who participated in this year's election.
Over the next few months our District administration and the Board of Trustees will build a budget for the 2019-20 school year. The $20 million in levy funding is instrumental to this process. The levy includes an additional $4 million annually for school security, mental health wellness, staff training, classroom supplies and employee pay.
The Board of Trustees is scheduled to hold its annual budget hearing on June 17, followed by adoption of the budget on June 24.
New elementary school site prepped
The new K-5 school, funded from the 2017 school bond measure, is scheduled to open in September 2020. Our plan is to go out for bid on the project in June and break ground in July.
For now, we have been removing old buildings and some trees on the site, which consisted of three former residential properties on the south side of Prairie. Two houses are being relocated from the site.
Architects West is working on schematic designs for the new elementary school and will refine designs over the next month.
Lakes project to start in April
Our long-anticipated remodel and expansion of Lakes Middle School is set to begin this spring. We are preparing now for over $4 million in work to be completed this summer, in time for the new school year next September.
This project by Longwell + Trapp Architects and Ginno Construction Co. is part of the school district’s 2017 bond measure. We anticipate starting construction in April or May. The work will give us more space and important upgrades to the school, including:
A new media center/library at the front of the school
A courtyard/outdoor classroom
A second gymnasium, matching our other secondary schools
Remodel of the locker rooms
A new band room
A new choir room
Flexible classroom space
A larger, updated industrial arts classroom/shop
A new, more secure front entry and reception area
Front office remodel
Connected hallways between north and south classroom wings
Relocated outside basketball hoops

How to borrow e-Books and audiobooks for spring break
With Spring Break just around the corner, this is a great time to dive into our rich eBook and audiobook library within OverDrive, the school district's digital library, and the Sora reading app for students. Over 3,000 titles, from juvenile fiction on up, are available.
Students may log into OverDrive using their standard district username and password. User names consist of the last two digits of a student's graduation year + their first initial + their full last name + @students.cdaschools.org. For example: 53MTwain@students.cdaschools.org.
You also can download the Sora app from iTunes Store or Google Play. Sora allows you to check out and read titles on your personal device. Go to http://help.soraapp.com for assistance.
1. Find our school district (Coeur d’Alene School District) as the provider upon initial
setup.
2. Enter your username (not email address) and password (case sensitive).
3. Browse the “explore” tab and borrow a book. Your book will open in the app so that
you can read right away.
4. Close the book and go to your “shelf” to see all your books including those assigned
to you. From there, tap "Open Book" or "Open Audiobook" to read or listen to the book. Or tap "Options" to renew or return the book, get into your notes and highlights
and more.
Happy reading and listening!
Time for spring assessments
Coeur d'Alene Public Schools is preparing to administer the ISAT by Smarter Balanced in grades 3-8 and 10. The English language arts and math tests will be given between March 18 and May 17. Each student's schedule within that window will be generated by their school administration and teaching staff.
The Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) measures student learning and growth in English language arts, mathematics and science for specific grade levels.
To assist you, we've provided a Parent ISAT FAQ as well as a link to the public Practice Tests and Sample Items where you can see the specific types of questions that students will encounter and how they can be answered.
You can expect to see student reports by the end of the school year.
