HRHS Student and Family Newsletter
May 8, 2023
Hello Families!
We are at that time of year where the days seem to be flying by! Between the Spring Fling, Spring Drama Production Prom, Senior Week, Graduation, Raider Days, AP exams, MCAS, Spring Concert, final exams, and field trips, we have been busy, and we have a lot to look forward to in the next six weeks!
This past week we celebrated Staff Appreciation Week! I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the many families who donated time, food, gift cards, prizes, and other items, in addition to writing lovely notes of gratitude for our staff at Hampshire. In addition, so many students contributed to our celebration, including approximately 20 students who came to school before 7am last Friday to cheer on their teachers as they walked the red carpet! It was a fun week and it really captured the spirit of our HRHS community. Thank you to everyone who contributed and participated!
I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming spring events and athletic competitions! As always, feel free to reach out at any time with questions.
Thank you,
Lauren Hotz

Upcoming College Workshops for Families Grades 8-11
College Financing Workshop - Thursday May 11th at 6pm in the library.
This workshop will be helpful to families of 8th graders who are only beginning to think about college, families of 11th graders who will be applying to colleges in the fall, and all families in between.
Todd Anthony, a local financial aid expert, will be at HRHS to help families understand the financial aid application process, learn ways to maximize the amount of financial aid you are eligible to receive, and begin to plan how you will pay for college.
Even if your family is not eligible for need-based aid, the presentation will cover strategies on how to pay for college without it putting a strain on the rest of your finances.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- How to identify “Right Fit” colleges that will give you the best financial return on your investment.
- How to send your child to an expensive private university for less than a state school.
- Which assets are taken into consideration when the U.S. Department of Education calculates your Family Contribution.
- How to lower your “out-of-pocket” costs and get the maximum amount of money from each school.
- How to not overpay for college or have to rely on 529 plans, expensive private student loans or raiding your retirement accounts.
- How to get ahead by developing a customized plan early enough to meet all the college costs you will incur as a family

College Planning Night - Thursday, June 8th, 6:00 pm in the library
During the evening, we will discuss what families and students can do to begin to prepare for college. The highlight of the evening will be a panel discussion with a group of parents who have recently supported their own students through the college search and application process. These parents will discuss strategies for beginning the college search process, tackling college applications and managing the financial aid process.
This evening will be geared to families of students in grades 8-10 but 11th grade families are welcome to join. Many 11th grade families attended this same College Planning Night on Zoom in the spring of 2021.

Mental Health Essentials for Parents and Caregivers
The office of Massachusetts Senate President Karen E. Spilka, in partnership with the Mental Health Collaborative, is pleased to host a presentation from the Collaborative, “Mental Health Essentials for Parents and Caregivers.” Mental Health Collaborative is a Hopkinton-based nonprofit organization that serves educators, school districts, and families across the country by improving their understanding of mental health.
This free webinar aims to provide parents and caregivers, particularly those with children in grades 6 through 12, with the tools they need to understand their children’s stress, identify emotional and behavioral health issues and their treatments, and empower them to obtain and maintain good mental health for their families. Knowing whether to worry and when, where, and how to get help is key. It’s important that we overcome the stigma that has prevented too many of us from taking good care of our mental health for too long.
Mental Health Essentials for Parents and Caregivers is part of the #MetroWestKids Initiative, which for six years has offered programs related to mental health, social-emotional learning, and related topics for audiences in MetroWest. For the first time, this program is available to statewide audiences. RSVP here if you are interested. Live translation is available in Portuguese, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL).
