Keeping you informed about our schools -- Dec. 13, 2024
City of Aberdeen's first student representative sworn in
Audon Allen, a senior at Harbor Junior/Senior High School, was sworn in Wednesday, Dec. 11, as the City of Aberdeen’s first student representative to serve on the City Council. In the photo above he is shown with Mayor Doug Orr.
At Harbor High, Audon is an ASB leader, leader of the student store, helps organize activities of the Native Education Program, is serving an internship with Grays Harbor Youth Works and is on track to graduate early despite being behind in credits when he first enrolled at HHS.
“When he came to us, he just wanted to do his GED,” Principal Lisa Griebel said. “But we talked him into doing our in-person Harbor Junior/Senior High and he has rocked it.”
Mrs. Griebel expects that he will be an outstanding representative for youth on the City Council. “He is kind, compassionate, smart and organized,” she said.
Town Hall delves into safety and student success
Co-superintendents Traci Sandstrom and Lynn Green hosted a community town hall on Tuesday at Aberdeen High School devoted to school safety initiatives and the Portrait of a Graduate.
“Those who were able to come were informed about these projects and we appreciate that they took the time to learn even more and talk with us about them,” Superintendent Traci Sandstrom said.
The superintendents also provided an update on the Seismic Safety Planning that could see several schools rebuilt out of the tsunami inundation zone and others retrofitted to withstand an earthquake event. At this time, they shared, it appears that relocating the Harbor Learning Center from the Hopkins Building to district-owned property near AHS is furthest along in the process and likely to become the first project.
The superintendents also talked about the Portrait of a Graduate, which identifies the characteristics students need to be successful in school and beyond. Adaptability, Responsibility, Confidence, Critical Thinking and Communication have been identified. The next phase of the work is to identify what those traits look like at every grade level and, of course, in a graduate of the Aberdeen School District.
“We are looking forward to this work and will be sharing how our families can support development of these traits at home,” Superintendent Lynn Green said.
The annual AHS and Miller Winter Choir Concert took place this week in front of a packed house of friends and family in the Auditorium at Aberdeen High School
under the direction of Choir Director Kyle Guggisberg

Install or update your FlashAlert phone app today
The Great Shakeout is a great time to make sure your FlashAlert account is up to date.
In the 40-plus years since FlashAlert was created, we have begun to use other platforms such as social media and robocalling to parents to ensure the broadest possible coverage of emergency messages.
However, FlashAlert is the most reliable method for ASD5 emergency news to land in your InBox or pop up on your phone. It's free and anyone can subscribe.
Install the FlashAlert app on your phone.
You can also sign up to receive FlashAlert via email. This method must be renewed annually. If you already have an account, this time of year is an excellent time to refresh.
